Aussie workers face less job security and weaker pay rises, with lay-off intentions reaching near-record highs across the nation<\/p>\n
In grim news for workers, a new report by the Australian HR Institute shows more than one in four employers expect to make work redundancies in the September quarter.<\/p>\n
This is the equal second highest level of redundancy intention recorded according to the survey data of more than 600 senior business decision makers.<\/p>\n

Australian HR Institute chief executive Sarah McCann-Bartlett said the jump in redundancies come as workers\u2019 skill sets do not match employees\u2019 needs.<\/p>\n
\u201cAdditionally, the survey data in this report suggests that the roles employers have most difficulty filling are skilled trades,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe projected increase in redundancy activity therefore reflects a range of environmental and workplace changes, not only cost reduction by employers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The economic pressures facing Australian businesses have intensified in recent months, with many companies forced to reassess their workforce requirements amid changing market conditions.<\/p>\n
The report also found expectations for pay increases in the 12 months to July have fallen to 2.9 per cent, down from 3.3 per cent over the last quarter.<\/p>\n
However, only 14 per cent of employers reported that they are planning to implement a pay freeze in the next quarter.<\/p>\n
This still would see the wages for millions of Aussies stagnate.<\/p>\n

While a number of businesses will be looking to lay-off staff, the Australian HR Institute also says there is a jump in the number of businesses looking to add to the workforce.<\/p>\n
According to their figures, 69 per cent of organisations say they plan on recruiting over the next three months.<\/p>\n
A further third are saying they are currently experiencing difficulties finding workers, although this is down from 38 per cent in June 2025.<\/p>\n
Overall average employee turnover which includes involuntary and voluntary turnover remains at 15 per cent for the 12-months until June 30.<\/p>\n
\u201cDespite softer economic growth, the demand for skilled workers remains strong,\u201d Ms McCann-Bartlett said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, the responsibility for raising skills does not lie solely with employers.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms McCann-Bartlett said those looking to get into the workforce could consider upskilling.<\/p>\n
\u201cJob seekers should consider specialist training, and there are plenty of free or low-cost online courses that can help separate them from the crowd,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
