\n\tAt the age of 100<\/a>, David Attenborough<\/a> remains as fascinated by the natural world as ever, a zest he shares with viewers in the Emmy-contending National Geographic<\/a> documentary\u00a0Ocean with David Attenborough<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s life at its most mesmerizing,\u201d he says of the planet\u2019s oceans. Having reached this stage of his explorations, he observes, \u201cI now understand the most important place on Earth is not on land.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film shares wonders of the marine environment \u2014 and alarming threats to the oceans. Footage of industrial fishing techniques shows how oceans floors are being violently scraped in search of a few marketable species, with much of the \u201ccatch\u201d killed and discarded.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBottom trawling is\u2026 a practice that\u2019s been going on for centuries, but it\u2019s become such an industrial scale now that it has a huge, huge impact on our ocean,\u201d said Ocean\u00a0director Keith Scholey<\/a>, during an appearance at Deadline\u2019s Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted event. \u201cAnd what is surprising is no one knows it\u2019s going on. It\u2019s as common as plowing a field\u2026 and yet people have never seen images of it before. And so, I think it was a real revelation in the film that this is what industrial fishing really looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film highlights some positive developments, like reserving parts of the ocean as \u201cno take\u201d zones to allow overfished species to recover. That\u2019s happening in the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn five years, you see change; in 10 years, you see massive change,\u201d Scholey affirmed. \u201cThere\u2019s this wonderful thing called \u2018spillover\u2019 in the protected area: You get lots and lots of big animals, whether it be crayfish or fish, they produce huge amounts of eggs, produce huge amounts of babies that then flood into the ocean [beyond] the protected area. And so, you see fisheries recover as well. Marine protection is a win-win for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAttenborough has won three Primetime Emmys for Best Narrator. Sir David lends his mellifluous voice to\u00a0Ocean, but he also appears on camera throughout it.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cNearly all the scenes that we shot in that film, he was 98 when we shot them,\u201d Scholey said. \u201cI was at an event last night and I saw him and he was as bouncy as ever.\u201d<\/p>\n
