Pictures Chief Mike De Luca knows exactly why A24\u2019s \u201cBackrooms\u201d and Focus Features\u2019 \u201cObsession\u201d are breaking box office records \u2014 and it has everything to do with where their directors came from.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey hone their craft online. Kane worked on \u2018Backrooms\u2019 for five years,\u201d De Luca said Saturday at the Produced By Conference. \u201cThese filmmakers are in a dialogue with their audience from the word \u2018go.\u2019 Their subscribers have direct input in each iteration of these things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The success of both films, De Luca argued, comes down to access \u2014 the gatekeeping that once kept young filmmakers out of Hollywood has loosened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was really expensive for a young writer-director to make a short film or make an actual full-length independent movie,\u201d Du Luca added. \u201cNow the tools of filmmaking have become cheaper. You can get something on YouTube seen by a producer, and you don\u2019t have to go to film school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<a class=\"the-wrap-read-more__image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/industry-news\/business\/jason-blum-backrooms-obsession-box-office-feeling-of-the-70s\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Jason-Blum.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"Jason Blum\"   data-portal-copyright=\"TheWrap\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\"\/>\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>De Luca also credited producers for doing the work, singling out \u201cObsession\u201d producer James Harris, who found Barker by watching shorts on YouTube.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood for him for getting to that guy first,\u201d De Luca said. \u201cBut that\u2019s available to all producers. YouTube and TikTok and Instagram are where oncoming talent is. Honing their craft and not having to go to film school, not having to get into some dance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>De Luca\u2019s comments echo those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/industry-news\/business\/jason-blum-backrooms-obsession-box-office-feeling-of-the-70s\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">made earlier in the day<\/a> by Blumhouse\u2019s Jason Blum, who drew a parallel between today\u2019s YouTube bred filmmakers and the 1970s film auteur movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA little bit like the 70s, I would say the writer-director is the star again, which I think is fantastic,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<a class=\"the-wrap-read-more__image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/media-platforms\/politics\/spencer-pratt-palisades-fire-activist-larry-vein-brother-letter-hollywood\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/jon.vein_.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"Jon Vein and Karen Bass\"   data-portal-copyright=\"TheWrap\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\"\/>\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Warner Bros.
