Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam accused Israel of pursuing a \u201cscorched-earth policy\u201d as part of its operations against Hezbollah<\/a>, The Guardian reported on Sunday.<\/p>\n

In a televised address on Saturday, Salam called the IDF\u2019s actions a \u201ccollective punishment\u201d against southern Lebanese residents by \u201cdestroying towns and villages, and forcing their inhabitants into exile.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Sunday morning, the IDF issued an evacuation order for all residents of southern Lebanon, especially those living south of the Zahleh River. Last week, the IDF issued several evacuation orders for numerous villages in the area.<\/p>\n

The actions will bring \u201cneither security nor stability\u201d to Israel, The Guardian reported him as saying.<\/p>\n

During the address, The\u00a0Guardian said that Salam had also defended the ongoing US-backed negotiations with Israel, noting that while the outcome was \u201cnot guaranteed,\u201d an agreement would be the \u201cleast costly path for our country and our people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Negotiations took place on Friday in Washington between Israeli and Lebanese military officials,<\/a> with the aim of launching a “security track\u201d of negotiations between the delegations, focused on fortifying their strained ceasefire.<\/p>\n

Next Tuesday and Wednesday, negotiations are scheduled to focus on the \u201cpolitical track,\u201d aimed at lasting calm.<\/p>\n

The operation began several days ago, the military said on Sunday<\/a>, with the goal of eliminating the threat Hezbollah poses to the citizens of northern Israel, and it is currently expanding to additional areas.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the troops’ entry, the Israel Air Force conducted extensive support strikes against Hezbollah infrastructure in the area.<\/p>\n

Support fire for the ground troops also included artillery and tank fire.<\/p>\n
