Paul McCartney, like any passionate fan of the Beatles, finds it difficult to choose his favorite album from the iconic rock band. <\/p>\n
The legendary musician, 83, is Willie Geist\u2019s latest Sunday Sitdown guest. Together, the two discussed McCartney\u2019s decades-long career in the music industry, both with the band and as a solo artist. During their chat, Willie asked McCartney if he could name one album in the band\u2019s discography that represents the Beatles at their \u201cbest.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s always a very difficult question, you know?\u201d McCartney replied. \u201cMy mind went to \u2018Rubber Soul,\u2019 because I think that was a change in what we\u2019d been doing.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said the 1965 album, their sixth, was a little more \u201cadvanced.\u201d<\/p>\n
But, of course, he couldn\u2019t highlight just one album in the band\u2019s extensive catalogue. <\/p>\n
\u201cThen I\u2019d have to say \u2018Sgt. Pepper\u2019 was, like, a crazy different experience,\u201d he continued, referring to their 1967 album, \u201cSgt. Pepper\u2019s Lonely Hearts Club Band.\u201d<\/p>\n
He had one more album to add that is many fans\u2019 favorite. \u201cAnd then I would probably finish up with \u2018Abbey Road,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
McCartney, who released his 12th studio album, \u201cThe Boys of Dungeon Lane,\u201d on May 29, still reflects on his time in the band and their monumental success. He recalled the Beatles making their American debut on the \u201cThe Ed Sullivan Show\u201d in 1964. <\/p>\n
Before they landed in the States, McCartney remembered the airplane pilot hearing that there were many fans waiting for his arrival, along with John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison. But the group wasn\u2019t anticipating the massive crowd that welcomed them. <\/p>\n
They performed \u201cTwist and Shout\u201d on \u201cThe Ed Sullivan Show\u201d and didn\u2019t understand at the time how big the variety show was in the U.S. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe didn\u2019t kinda know quite some of the TV shows we were doing. Like Ed Sullivan, we\u2019d never heard of him. It didn\u2019t phase us. It was just like, \u2018OK, it\u2019s another gig,\u2019\u201d McCartney said, laughing. <\/p>\n
He recently returned to the Ed Sullivan Theater to perform during Stephen Colbert\u2019s last episode of \u201cThe Late Show,\u201d which aired May 22. <\/p>\n
Speaking about visiting the historic venue again, McCartney told Willie, \u201cIt\u2019s magical when you realize that the space you\u2019re standing in was the same space that those four boys stood in. And now here we are.\u201d<\/p>\n
