\n France has urged a tougher Western approach towards intercepting ships carrying Russian oil in defiance of sanctions, saying they frequently fly under false flags, are uninsured or lack safety certification.\n <\/p>\n
\n In March, the French navy seized an oil tanker in the Mediterranean that Macron said belonged \u200cto Russia\u2019s shadow fleet, which comprises several hundred tankers through which Russia evades sanctions.\n <\/p>\n
\n These ships \u201cseek to reap profits and finance Russia\u2019s war effort,\u201d Macron said then.\n <\/p>\n
\n The United States has eased sanctions on Russian oil already at sea as the conflict in the Middle East war disrupts oil supplies. Europe has not followed suit.\n <\/p>\n
\n The UK government said in March that \u201cdisrupting, deterring and degrading Russia\u2019s shadow fleet \u2013 and starving Putin\u2019s war machine of funds \u2013 \u2060is a priority for this government\u201d and its allies.\n <\/p>\n
\n In January, France stopped another oil tanker between the southern coast of Spain and the northern coast of Morocco on suspicion that it was part of the Russian shadow fleet.\n <\/p>\n
