The Innu Nation has postponed a three-day vote until further notice that could ratify a historic settlement agreement with Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec, as members grieve a Sheshatshiu woman allegedly murdered by her partner.<\/p>\n
Spokesperson Donna Paddon said the Innu Nation\u2019s board of directors had already decided to postpone the vote last Monday. But that was extended when Beatrice Penashue was killed on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn recognition of the profound impact these tragedies have had across Innu communities that postponement will be extended until further notice,\u201d Paddon wrote in an email to CBC.<\/p>\n
A previous attempt to ratify the Tsheuatishiun Agreement, also called the Reconciliation and Collaboration Agreement, in October\u00a0 failed due to low voter turnout<\/a>.<\/p>\n At least 50 per cent of eligible residents of both Sheshatshiu and Natuashish are required to vote on the multi-million dollar settlement meant to compensate Innu for harms caused by development of the Churchill River.<\/p>\n The agreement would have seen Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec pay $87 million to Sheshatshiu and Natuashish over 16 years, along with three per cent of the dividends the Quebec Crown corporation receives from Churchill Falls.\u00a0<\/p>\n It has since been re-negotiated and revised so members could cast their vote through May 29-June 1.
