{"id":471499,"date":"2026-06-02T00:40:14","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T00:40:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/471499\/"},"modified":"2026-06-02T00:40:14","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T00:40:14","slug":"physicists-just-achieved-perfect-randomness-for-the-first-time-ever-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/471499\/","title":{"rendered":"Physicists Just Achieved &#8216;Perfect Randomness&#8217; For The First Time Ever : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the hardest things to do in physics is to generate true, provably unpredictable randomness.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s because it&#8217;s impossible to determine randomness based on the output alone.<\/p>\n<p>Dice may have nicks and flaws that influence how they roll.<\/p>\n<p>Computer random-number generators are usually driven by algorithms.<\/p>\n<p>Even coin flips are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/quantum-computer-generates-truly-random-number-in-scientific-first\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">governed by physical forces<\/a> that, in theory, could be predicted.<\/p>\n<p>The difficulty lies not in generating numbers that appear random, but in showing that no one could have possibly predicted the outcome \u2013 that the system isn&#8217;t secretly affected by subtle hidden rules or biases.<\/p>\n<p>Now, a team of physicists at ETH Zurich in Switzerland has overcome that challenge by leveraging one of the strangest phenomena in quantum mechanics:  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/entanglement\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73016\" data-postid=\"203068\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">entanglement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1780360811_248_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The resulting sequence of zeros and ones is now really perfectly random, and we can even certify that,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/ethz.ch\/en\/news-and-events\/eth-news\/news\/2026\/05\/perfect-randomness-realised-for-the-first-time.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says physicist Renato Renner<\/a> of ETH Zurich.<\/p>\n<p>Randomness is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cda.cit.tum.de\/research\/quantum_randomness\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">crucial to modern security<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the core feature that makes passwords, authentication codes, and  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/quantum-cryptography\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73102\" data-postid=\"203068\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">encryption<\/a> keys harder to guess.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the reason password generators will produce a string of meaninglessly jumbled characters rather than something like YourFirstPet123.<\/p>\n<p>But the stakes extend far beyond a Flickr password to international security.<\/p>\n<p>Recent examples of security weaknesses include the <a href=\"https:\/\/avd.aquasec.com\/nvd\/2024\/cve-2024-31497\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2024 PuTTY vulnerability<\/a>, in which one of the world&#8217;s most widely used <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Secure_Shell\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SSH clients<\/a> had a flaw in its random-number generation for cryptographic signatures.<\/p>\n<p>And don&#8217;t forget the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amd.com\/en\/resources\/product-security\/bulletin\/amd-sb-7055.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2025 AMD Zen 5 RDSEED bug<\/a>, in which a hardware random-number instruction would generate predictable values while falsely reporting success.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/tube.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"427\" class=\"size-full wp-image-203082\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The 30-meter tube that connects the qubits. Photons can move between the two chips, allowing  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/entanglement\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73016\" data-postid=\"203068\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">quantum entanglement<\/a>. (<a href=\"https:\/\/ethz.ch\/en\/news-and-events\/eth-news\/news\/2026\/05\/perfect-randomness-realised-for-the-first-time.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kilian Kessler\/ETH Zurich<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>If a code is not perfectly random, it&#8217;s easier for attackers to guess.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Any conventional electronic device, like a phone or a computer, is completely deterministic,&#8221; Renner told Adam Kovac at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/a-quantum-computing-systems-perfect-randomness-could-keep-your-secrets-safe\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scientific American<\/a>, &#8220;so it&#8217;s actually very difficult for a computer or any other electronic device to generate a random value.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To try to find a solution to this problem, the researchers turned to a quantum experiment known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bell_test\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bell test<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They created a pair of entangled quantum bits, or qubits, separated by 30 meters (98 feet) and cooled to temperatures close to absolute zero.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/randomness.jpg\" alt=\"Physicists Just Created 'Perfect Randomness' For The First Time\" width=\"642\" height=\"321\" class=\"size-full wp-image-203071\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>An image of a sheep (left) encrypted using imperfect randomness (middle) and perfect randomness (right). (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41586-026-10521-8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kulikov et al., Nature, 2026<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/quantum-computer-generates-truly-random-number-in-scientific-first\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Previous quantum random-number generators<\/a> could produce highly random outputs, but they still relied on trusted hardware and perfectly random starting conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The ETH Zurich team instead demonstrated something called randomness amplification, deliberately starting with imperfect randomness \u2013 taking randomness that may contain subtle flaws or biases and transforming it into randomness that can be certified as perfectly unpredictable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Crucially,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41586-026-10521-8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">they write in their paper<\/a>, &#8220;randomness amplification has been proven to be impossible by purely classical means.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_stargazing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/FOMO-1200x628-_Dont-miss-the-next-breakthrough_-cosmic-colourful-642x336.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"336\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-201722 size-medium\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The result is a system capable of generating certifiably perfect randomness, even when starting with flawed or imperfect randomness.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-use-crystals-to-generate-truly-random-numbers-in-first-for-chemistry\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Crystals Have Been Used to Generate Truly Random Numbers For The Very First Time<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s also device independent, which means the randomness does not depend on trusting the hardware itself, but on the quantum behavior observed in the experiment.<\/p>\n<p>In the long term, the researchers say that their system could perform the same function atomic clocks perform for timekeeping \u2013 a physically certified source of randomness against which others can be measured and set.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The technical improvements allowed us, for the first time, to create random numbers that will remain perfectly random for all eternity \u2013 no matter what analytical methods are used to assess their randomness,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/ethz.ch\/en\/news-and-events\/eth-news\/news\/2026\/05\/perfect-randomness-realised-for-the-first-time.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Renner says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The research has been published in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41586-026-10521-8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nature<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"One of the hardest things to do in physics is to generate true, provably unpredictable randomness.
