{"id":471678,"date":"2026-06-02T03:09:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T03:09:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/471678\/"},"modified":"2026-06-02T03:09:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T03:09:08","slug":"knesset-votes-in-favor-of-bill-to-split-role-of-attorney-general","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/471678\/","title":{"rendered":"Knesset votes in favor of bill to split role of attorney-general"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A bill that would split the role of the attorney-general passed in its first reading in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/politics-and-diplomacy\/article-898035\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Knesset<\/a> plenum on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Sixty-five voted in favor of the bill, while 47 opposed it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The bill, advanced by MKs Hanoch Milwidsky, Yitzhak Kreuzer, and additional Knesset members, will now return for discussion in the Knesset\u2019s Constitution, Law and Justice Committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">If passed, the role of Attorney-General would be divided between two separate officials: an Attorney-General and a state prosecutor.<\/p>\n<p>The attorney-general will be appointed by the government following a recommendation from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/article-898050\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prime minister<\/a> and the justice minister, following the same term as the government that appointed them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The state prosecutor, on the other hand, will be appointed for a six-year term by a public committee and will head the prosecution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The purpose of the law is to prevent an excessive concentration of power and inherent conflict of interest, allowing ministers to reject the attorney-general\u2019s legal opinions.<\/p>\n<p>Current Attorney-General <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/politics-and-diplomacy\/article-898001\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gali Baharav-Miara<\/a> attacked the move, calling it \u201cstage two of the judicial reform\u201d and warning of a race to eliminate democratic institutions ahead of a possible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/politics-and-diplomacy\/article-898048\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Knesset dissolution.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A bill that would split the role of the attorney-general passed in its first reading in the Knesset&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":471679,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[21624,42,954,14406,43,101997,40,38,41,39],"class_list":["post-471678","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-headlines","tag-attorney-general","tag-headlines","tag-israeli-politics","tag-knesset","tag-news","tag-the-state-prosecutor","tag-top-news","tag-top-stories","tag-topnews","tag-topstories"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/471678","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=471678"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/471678\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/471679"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=471678"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=471678"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=471678"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
