\n\tMartin Scorsese<\/a> is the latest Oscar-winning director to hop on the AI wagon, joining the AI firm Black Forest Labs<\/a> as an adviser in a bid to \u201cpush the bounds of creativity to create deeper and richer experiences for audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cCinema is a young medium, only around 125 years old, so we have to be open to how it can evolve,\u201d\u00a0Scorsese said in a statement<\/a> posted on Black Forest Labs\u2019\u00a0website. \u201cI utilized 3D with\u00a0\u2018Hugo\u2019\u00a0and de-aging technology for\u00a0\u2018The Irishman.\u2019 Now, with this tool, I can share what I\u2019m visualizing more clearly and efficiently to my creative team \u2014 the production designer, art designer, and cinematographer \u2014 for them to build on to enrich cinematic intelligence.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a video filmed at Scorsese\u2019s New York City office that accompanied the partnership\u2019s announcement, the \u201cGoodfellas\u201c\u00a0director uses the firm\u2019s FLUX generative-AI model to help storyboard a scene. He then discusses staging the crime film\u2019s famous Steadicam shot, which tracks mobster Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) as he makes his way through the Copacabana nightclub, and notes how each \u201cvignette\u201d\u00a0through the scene had to be intricately staged.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf you have a tool like this, you could figure it out much much quicker and you could save production time, and also less wear and tear on the crew,\u201d\u00a0Scorsese said in the video.<\/p>\n

\n\tBlack Forest Labs CEO Robin Rombach, who co-founded the Freiburg, Germany-based firm in 2024, told the New York Times that Scorsese\u2019s partnership represents \u201ca great proof point that this works.\u201d The director\u2019s spokesperson said he was introduced to the firm through the investment firm BroadLight Capital, an investor in Black Forest Labs that was co-founded by Rick Yorn, Scorsese\u2019s manager. CAA co-founder Michael Ovitz, who has also invested in the AI firm, also helped seal the partnership, according to the Times.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt was unclear whether Scorsese himself has invested in the firm, and Black Forest Labs did not respond to an immediate request for comment. Scorsese\u2019s rep declined to comment.<\/p>\n

\n\tScorsese, one of the most accomplished directors in film history, joins a host of fellow Acadamy Award-winning colleagues in the adoption of AI \u2014 though to varying degrees.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAvatar\u201d\u00a0director James Cameron is on the board of directors for Stability AI, the maker of the text-to-image model Stable Diffusion and where Rombach is an alum. \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d\u00a0director Peter Jackson also said<\/a> at a Cannes Film Festival masterclass last month that \u201cI don\u2019t dislike\u201d\u00a0AI, comparing it to \u201ca special effect.\u201d Not all agree: \u201cPan\u2019s Labyrinth\u201d\u00a0director Guillermo Del Toro last month slammed those who believe \u201cart can be done with a fucking app\u201d\u00a0and last year the filmmaker said<\/a> he would \u201crather die\u201d\u00a0than use generative AI in his films.<\/p>\n

\n\tScorsese\u2019s endorsement of Black Forest Labs comes as Hollywood enters a new wave of AI adoption. The Tribeca Festival will host<\/a> the world premiere of \u201cDreams of Violets,\u201d\u00a0a 75-minute fully AI-generated docudrama focused on the Iranian civilian resistance. \u201cRogue One\u201d\u00a0director Gareth Edwards also said at Amazon\u2019s AI on the Lot event last week that he wants to create a hybrid generative AI film.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor his part, Scorsese said in his statement that he tested out Black Forest Labs\u2019\u00a0tools to help storyboard a scene on an upcoming film and claimed the AI tools helped him better express the image he had in his head.<\/p>\n
