The idea behind Steven Spielberg\u2019s latest film, \u201cDisclosure Day,\u201d <\/a>has a ripped-from-the-headlines origin story. <\/p>\n

The auteur, 79, is reuniting with one of his favorite genres for his 37th movie: science fiction. \u201cDisclosure Day,\u201d out June 12, follows a governmental conspiracy involving the existence of extraterrestrials. <\/p>\n

Spielberg spoke with Craig Melvin along with stars Emily Blunt, Josh O\u2019Connor and Colman Domingo in an interview on TODAY June 3 to share why the genre has captivated him for decades and what inspired the flick\u2019s central premise. <\/p>\n

The filmmaker, known for hits like \u201cJurassic Park,\u201d \u201cWar of the Worlds,\u201d \u201cClose Encounters of the Third Kind\u201d and \u201cET,\u201d said he can\u2019t escape his fascination with whether or not humans are alone in the universe. <\/p>\n

When Craig asked Spielberg where that curiosity originates, the Oscar winner replied, \u201cJust a deep interest in the unknown becoming the known, you know? Ever since I was a kid, I was fascinated with the sky, and what\u2019s up there.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said his attraction to science fiction is rooted in exploring the possibility of other beings visiting Earth.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs this something that you think that human beings are ready for?\u201d Craig wondered. <\/p>\n

Spielberg laughed and responded, \u201cWell, ready or not, here it comes. I mean, that\u2019s the premise of our film.\u201d <\/p>\n

He revealed he came up with the idea for \u201cDisclosure Day\u201d after videos surfaced a few years ago of unidentified flying objects.<\/a> Following the release of the mysterious footage, Congress held its first public hearing on UFOs \u2014\u00a0now known as unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAPs) \u2014 in 50 years in May 2022<\/a>. Just last month, the Pentagon shared new reports detailing decades of possible UFO sightings<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Spielberg shared that the videos and hearing in 2022 \u201cchanged everything\u201d for him. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t just sensationalized,\u201d he said. \u201cBut this was something being taken very seriously by the major news media.\u201d <\/p>\n

And the premise for his newest film was born. <\/p>\n

In \u201cDisclosure Day,\u201d O\u2019Connor portrays a cybersecurity expert and Blunt plays a television meteorologist. Both are trying to reveal the truth about alien life despite a government agency trying to silence them. Domingo plays a vocal advocate who is also attempting to expose the government cover-up. <\/p>\n

While speaking with Craig, Blunt said working on the film \u201ccompletely\u201d changed her thinking about alien life. <\/p>\n

\u201cI felt my opinion had been changed even in prepping this movie,\u201d she said. \u201cI had never gone down the rabbit hole of looking at every congressional hearing that\u2019s taken place, every documentary, docuseries, everyone who has had a genuine experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI became invested in them, in the people who had had these experiences,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

As for O\u2019Connor, he said starring in \u201cDisclosure Day\u201d made him develop a desire to learn more about the topic. <\/p>\n

\u201cI really feel a sense of, like, a hunger for this information now, because I think there aren\u2019t many advancements or bits of knowledge that we can receive that will completely unite us than something like this. The humility that it brings, knowing that we are not alone, could be \u2026\u201d he shared. <\/p>\n

\u201cReally a positive thing,\u201d Blunt chimed in.<\/p>\n

\u201c … In the hostile world, could unite us,\u201d O\u2019Connor finished.<\/p>\n

Spielberg confirmed he is confident in his belief that there\u2019s extraterrestrial life. But, he isn\u2019t certain that they are living on Earth. <\/p>\n
