{"id":474241,"date":"2026-06-03T14:44:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T14:44:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/474241\/"},"modified":"2026-06-03T14:44:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T14:44:09","slug":"mental-health-the-cinderella-of-our-health-system-for-far-too-long","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/474241\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Mental health the Cinderella of our health system for far too long"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cMental health has been the Cinderella of our health system for far too long \u2014 it must now become a priority.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Those were the words of a grieving mother on Wednesday as she settled a High Court action over the death of her daughter by suicide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Kathleen Maguire\u2019s daughter, Maxine, a master\u2019s degree student,  <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/arid-41855754.html\">was just 25 when she died in February 2017<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Her family, from Newbridge, Co Kildare, were in the Four Courts on Wednesday as the HSE, in a letter read to the court, \u201capologised unreservedly and sincerely for the deficits in the care\u201d provided to her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Maxine\u2019s parents Robert and Kathleen Maguire had sued the HSE, Naas General Hospital, and St Vincent\u2019s University Hospital, Dublin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The letter was read out as they settled a High Court action over her death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The letter stated: \u201cWe apologise unreservedly and sincerely for the deficits in the care provided to Maxine which culminated in her subsequent untimely and tragic death and for the continuing profound sadness and suffering this has caused you and her family.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The letter, from the head of service for mental health in Dublin South, Kildare, and West Wicklow Community Healthcare on behalf of the HSE, also offered heartfelt condolences to Maxine\u2019s family on their devastating loss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Outside court, Kathleen called on the mental health minister to implement key recommendations made at the inquest and the HSE\u2019s own review into her daughter\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThey have the potential to save precious lives. Maxine\u2019s life mattered and her death must matter too. Even now she can still help others through the changes we hope to see,\u201d said Ms Maguire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Calling for mental health to be made a priority, she said: \u201cA piece of me died with Maxine and we must somehow now try to piece our lives back together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThis has not been an easy journey and it has take a huge toll on our entire family,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Maxine was a beautiful young woman who loved her family dearly, said her mother. \u201cHer goal in life was to help people She was studying for her master&#8217;s degree in child youth and family studies and hoped to become a social worker,\u201d said Ms Maguire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Presented to hospital emergency department<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/5105028_4_articleinline_nintchdbpict000400267375_20copy.jpg\" alt=\"'We apologise unreservedly and sincerely for the deficits in the care provided to Maxine which culminated in her subsequent untimely and tragic death,' said the HSE.\" title=\"'We apologise unreservedly and sincerely for the deficits in the care provided to Maxine which culminated in her subsequent untimely and tragic death,' said the HSE.\" class=\"card-img\"\/>&#8216;We apologise unreservedly and sincerely for the deficits in the care provided to Maxine which culminated in her subsequent untimely and tragic death,&#8217; said the HSE.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"> The family\u2019s counsel, Declan Wade, told the court that Maxine, who suffered mental health issues, had presented to the emergency department at Naas General Hospital in December 2016 following a suspected overdose.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">She was treated and later transferred to St Vincent\u2019s in Dublin where she had a liver transplant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mr Wade told the court that Maxine was discharged home over the Christmas period but on December 31, 2016, she was rushed to hospital after a suicide attempt.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">She died on February 7, 2017, in the burns unit of a Dublin hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mr Wade said the action was settled after mediation and that there were significant causation issues in the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Noting the settlement, including the division of the statutory \u20ac35,000 solatium payment for mental distress, Mr Justice Paul Coffey described the case as \u201csad and tragic\u201d and extended his deepest sympathies to the Maguire family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A 2019  <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/arid-40822917.html\">inquest<\/a> into Maxine&#8217;s death recommended that a patient should receive a face-to-face review by a consultant psychiatrist before any decision to discharge is made.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The inquest said standard operating procedures should be put in place to make it easier to re-enter the mental health services after an extended period of discharge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It also recommended that all medical files should be on a computer system accessible to all relevant medical professionals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\u201cMental health has been the Cinderella of our health system for far too long \u2014 it must now&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":474242,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[35],"tags":[782,163,85,46,522,523],"class_list":["post-474241","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-mental-health","tag-courts","tag-health","tag-il","tag-israel","tag-mental-health","tag-mentalhealth"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/474241","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=474241"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/474241\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/474242"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=474241"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=474241"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=474241"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
