{"id":474911,"date":"2026-06-03T23:28:13","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T23:28:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/474911\/"},"modified":"2026-06-03T23:28:13","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T23:28:13","slug":"june-bristol-ranked-highest-outside-the-golden-triangle-for-spinout-value-creation-news-and-features","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/474911\/","title":{"rendered":"June: Bristol ranked highest outside the Golden Triangle for spinout value creation | News and features"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Bristol has been named the highest-ranked university outside the UK\u2019s Golden Triangle for spinout value creation, with a combined value of \u00a38.5bn since 2010.<\/p>\n<p>The newly published <a href=\"https:\/\/raeng.org.uk\/media\/yfpdjrqu\/01_spotlight_report_final_2026.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spotlight on Spinouts 2026 report from the Royal Academy of Engineering<\/a> ranks Bristol fourth in the UK and sixth in Europe for the value created by companies spun out from university research over the past 15 years, highlighting the University\u2019s growing reputation as a leading hub for innovation, entrepreneurship and commercialisation.<\/p>\n<p>The achievement places Bristol ahead of all institutions outside Oxford, Cambridge, and London, underlining the strength of the University\u2019s ecosystem and its ability to translate world-leading research and innovation into successful businesses delivering genuine local, national, and global economic and societal impact.<\/p>\n<p>Successful University of Bristol spinouts<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristol.ac.uk\/business\/innovate-and-grow\/research-commercialisation\/our-spin-out-companies\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> include PsiQuantum, Graphcore, Scarlet Therapeutics, Perceptual Robotics, Purespring Therapeutics, iCOMAT and Phasecraft.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Overall, the University has supported 46 spinouts backed by venture capitalists (VCs), with a combined enterprise value of \u00a38.5bn.<\/p>\n<p>PsiQuantum, now based in the US, is classed as a unicorn and was valued at $7bn last year, making it one of the world&#8217;s most valuable quantum technology companies.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Sophie Collet, the University of Bristol\u2019s Executive Director for Research, Enterprise and Innovation, said: \u201cThis recognition reflects the strength of our innovation ecosystem and entrepreneurial culture, which transforms world-leading research into real-world impact. Spinouts from the University of Bristol are addressing major global challenges while attracting significant investment. The new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus and Bristol Innovations Zone will further strengthen our capability and that of the region to enable deep tech companies to grow, collaborate, and scale globally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Spotlight on Spinouts 2026 report states: \u201cUK Spinout activity is becoming increasingly geographically diverse, with strong growth beyond the Golden Triangle and a broad range of universities generating significant value.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBristol stands out as the highest-ranked institution outside of the Golden Triangle with 46 VC-backed spinouts, 15 of which have reached $10 million+ in funding. Its strong score is also attributable to AI chips startup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graphcore.ai\/about\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Graphcore<\/a>, while US-based quantum spinout <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psiquantum.com\/unitedkingdom\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PsiQuantum<\/a> raised $2.6bn and was valued at $7bn in June 2025.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr Manjari Chandran-Ramesh, Committee Member, Royal Academy of Engineering Enterprise Committee, said: &#8220;UK spinouts are central to translating frontier research into commercial impact, with a direct role in addressing some of society\u2019s most pressing challenges. Over the past six years, the innovation landscape has evolved and spinouts have remained on a clear trajectory of growth. They are now more visible as a distinct and essential component of the UK\u2019s innovation economy, warranting sustained attention from across the ecosystem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This news follows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristol.ac.uk\/news\/2025\/december\/academic-spinout-analysis-.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The European Spinout Report 2025<\/a> &#8211; the first comprehensive analysis of the academic spinout sector across Europe published in December. It ranked Bristol fifth in the UK and tenth in Europe for life sciences and deep tech spinouts.<\/p>\n<p>Opening in 2026 at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristol.ac.uk\/temple-quarter-enterprise-campus\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristol.ac.uk\/business\/bristol-innovations\/#bristol-innovations-zone\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bristol Innovations Zone<\/a> will bring together world-class research, specialist facilities and innovation expertise with businesses of all sizes \u2013 from start-ups to global enterprises.
