In 1969, The Beatles<\/a> were practically over. Especially after their disastrous sessions in January, which eventually became the album Let It Be. The sessions were filmed with the intent of making a TV show of their recording sessions. In a way, they were pioneering reality TV. But the addition of cameras, as evidenced by Peter Jackson’s documentary, The Beatles: Get Back<\/a>, only served to sour their already deteriorated relationship.<\/p>\n

Shortly after they finished the sessions and decided to shelve the project, John Lennon<\/a> and Yoko Ono took off to get married. They had this idea to get married in Paris, where they wanted to have their honeymoon, but were told they needed to get married on British territory, so they went over to Gibraltar, before returning to Paris for their honeymoon. Afterward, they did their infamous “bed-in” at the Amsterdam Hilton. When he returned from his adventure, Lennon had already written a detailed account of the events and turned it into a song. He wanted to release it right away, so he went to the only person he could trust to make the song great. He and Paul McCartney<\/a> were not on the best of terms at the time, but creatively, they never stopped working great together. And this song brought them back together, at least for a moment.<\/p>\n

John Lennon Asked for Paul McCartney’s Help Despite Their Estrangement<\/p>\n

When John Lennon returned to England, newly married and with a new song, his fellow Beatles were scattered. Ringo Starr was on set filming The Magic Christian, and George Harrison was away on vacation. But his best friend and long-time songwriting partner was home, so, of course, Lennon took the song to Paul McCartney. The song was the retelling of his and Yoko Ono’s complicated journey towards getting married and their unconventional honeymoon. He titled it “The Ballad of John and Yoko”. “It\u2019s a piece of journalism,” Lennon described it.<\/a> “It\u2019s a folk song. That\u2019s why I called it The Ballad Of.”<\/p>\n

But just for a moment, while they were recording this song about Lennon’s wedding, the old magic was back. Lennon was so grateful to McCartney for his support in making that song that, when he released his classic protest song, “Give Peace a Chance,”<\/a> he signed it as Lennon-McCartney, despite it being a solo song<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Lennon-McCartney feud lasted a few years, but thankfully, they eventually reconciled.
