(File photo by Arty Sarkisian)<\/p>\n<p class=\"author custom\">By Nunatsiaq News<\/p>\n<p>The Nunavut government is preparing to roll out a new department to manage its post-devolution responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>Premier John Main announced the Department of Mines, Natural Resources and Land \u2014 or MNRL \u2014 Tuesday in the legislative assembly. It will serve as a \u201csingle point of access for land and resource development matters,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The department will be responsible for the administration, regulation, and sustainable development of natural resources on land that the GN will acquire from the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis includes public lands and fresh-water management, oversight of mineral and oil and gas development, and promotion of geoscience and mineral exploration through a Nunavut Geological Survey,\u201d Main said.<\/p>\n<p>The territory <a href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/stories\/article\/historic-moment-nunavut-signs-devolution-agreement-with-canada\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">signed<\/a> a devolution agreement with Ottawa in January 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Touted as the largest land transfer in Canadian history, it is scheduled to <a href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/stories\/article\/with-nunavut-devolution-1-year-away-whats-happening\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">take effect<\/a> on April 1, 2027.
