{"id":476803,"date":"2026-06-05T01:11:16","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T01:11:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/476803\/"},"modified":"2026-06-05T01:11:16","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T01:11:16","slug":"scientists-discover-an-astronomical-rosetta-stone-for-decoding-mysterious-cosmic-signals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/476803\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists Discover an Astronomical \u2018Rosetta Stone\u2019 for Decoding Mysterious Cosmic Signals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An international team of astronomers has uncovered what they are calling the clearest evidence yet for dying white dwarf stars as the origin of a class of <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/a-mysterious-radio-signal-from-space-was-traced-to-an-unexpected-source-and-its-something-within-our-own-galaxy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">mysterious cosmic signals<\/a> called <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/astronomers-have-located-the-source-of-strange-long-period-radio-pulses-coming-from-deep-space\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">long-period radio transients<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The research, led by University of Sydney PhD student Kovi Rose, potentially offers researchers a \u2018Rosetta Stone\u2019 capable of deciphering and categorizing other such signals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the first time, we have pinpointed the origin of these signals, confirming the source to be a \u2018cataclysmic variable\u2019, or an accreting white dwarf star,\u201d Rose explained in an email to The Debrief.<\/p>\n<p>The team, who made the discovery using CSIRO\u2019s ASKAP radio telescope, said that identifying the origin of these transient <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/astronomers-say-this-ancient-radio-signal-could-reveal-new-clues-about-mysterious-cosmic-dawn\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cosmic signals<\/a> that come from a few remote regions of the <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/tag\/milky-way\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milky Way<\/a> galaxy could also offer researchers a \u201cnatural laboratory\u201d to study the extreme <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/category\/physics\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">physics<\/a> that occur in such environments.<\/p>\n<p>Mysterious Cosmic Signals \u201cHave Puzzled Astronomers for Years\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the same email, long-period radio transients were initially thought to be slow-spinning <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/destruction-can-be-a-catalyst-for-creation-how-neutron-star-collisions-and-explosive-gamma-bursts-create-the-universes-heaviest-elements\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">neutron stars<\/a>, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/the-search-for-alien-tech-reveals-a-pulsar-at-the-heart-of-the-galaxy-and-it-could-help-test-einsteins-theory-of-gravity\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pulsars<\/a>, emitting periodic energy bursts. However, the team notes that mathematical models suggest that slow-rotating neutron stars cannot generate enough energy to produce the mysterious cosmic signals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLong-period radio transients have puzzled astronomers for years,\u201d Mr. Rose explained. \u201cWe\u2019ve only found about a dozen, and their origins have been unclear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a follow-up email, Rose told The Debrief that the latest discovery was not part of a search for white dwarf stars. Instead, the researcher explained that the discovery was \u201cserendipitous; i.e., we were not looking for anything. We found the unknown radio source in an all-sky survey using ASKAP and only afterward, using various instruments, did we identify that the origin of the radio source was a <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/tag\/white-dwarf\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">white dwarf<\/a> binary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unlike our solitary <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/tag\/sun\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sun<\/a>, this white dwarf is part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/doomed-binary-star-system-to-produce-brilliant-explosion-in-the-distant-future\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">binary star system<\/a>, named ASKAP J1745\u22125051, with a much larger but less dense <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/tag\/red-dwarf-stars\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">red dwarf<\/a> as its companion.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-48115 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/RESIZE-comsic-mysterious-cosmic-signals-300x134.jpg\" alt=\"mysterious cosmic signals\" width=\"550\" height=\"246\"  data- style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 550px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 550\/246;\"\/>Artists\u2019 impression of a white dwarf binary system, ASKAP J1745-5051, that could serve as a cosmic \u2018Rosetta Stone\u2019 for studying long-period radio transients. Image Credit: Carl Knox\/OzGrav\/Swinburne &amp; Joshua Preston Pritchard (CSIRO).<\/p>\n<p>The team ultimately determined that the smaller white dwarf, about the <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/unexpected-earth-sized-exoplanets-discovered-in-binary-star-system-test-the-limits-of-planet-formation-models\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">size of Earth<\/a> but with a mass closer to the Sun\u2019s, was shedding or accreting material onto the larger but less dense red dwarf star. As the material heats up, it releases <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/tag\/x-rays\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">X-rays<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The team also detected periodic <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/mysterious-space-object-transmitting-radio-signals-every-54-minutes-baffles-scientists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">bursts of radio signals<\/a> from the binary system. Although these regular emissions are tied to the system\u2019s orbital motion, the researchers found that the bursts of X-rays and radio signals didn\u2019t peak at the same time. According to Mr. Rose, this lack of synchronicity \u201ctells us they\u2019re being produced in different regions of the system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Analysis Reveals Long-Period Radio Transient Match<\/p>\n<p>A closer analysis suggested that, due to the proximity of the two stars, which orbit each other in just one hour, their interacting <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/tag\/magnetic-fields\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">magnetic fields<\/a> were producing regular radio-wave bursts, which the team clocked at 1.4-hour intervals.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Murphy, Head of School at the University of Sydney School of Physics and Chief Investigator at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (<a href=\"https:\/\/link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com\/ls\/click?upn=u001.i5MFNkUDbt13uNVa2NzRWYWq5kqoXO-2FMbK8rM7lni-2B1-2BIc7LArMs2inlw-2F4aDNYSUMkk_Yp4ydSxZWNatis3HtI6bBgOAYyWGFl-2B3Vn18w1ek7j5gmsyXc-2FBg0RxOeTWTBTW26Yb-2BEe7iw-2BjN9fU8TEdYFdI-2FLrEz4rdmX2Ynzw1Sd1TZGZEotm93mShogX8PnK-2BgAWNlIuV2Spcl1Aou9-2BFe16L79h1EBQ5thuAkQI8Glnpl-2FeZDt6VgSOzQ-2F3pOM879FTUpYUosQfxRvaMoUmy7sGORwqVxVCR5TdluWC1OvE9UasNrEaNpTceJ5WCTRROa5ZAix4MIq5nyk5JnYCFBBk8o4LlMEAb07ruLgQD-2FYyPdosGVAnymjJ6PXUAbYLnf8fT49Lxtw4x9pwSUqCLLbAE0blc0FKuF0vIFvjyayHJACc1E-2BtIzsT8FGfUMKtNlvkAXbvm3g1BxXnBna7l1Qw-3D-3D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OzGrav<\/a>), said that similar objects have previously been linked to binary star systems, \u201cbut this is the first one where we can clearly see both stars and the accretion process in action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the team compared the emissions from the binary system with those of previously detected long-period radio transients, the data were a clear match. According to Rose, this comparison proved definitively that this elusive category of mysterious cosmic signals \u201ccomes from a white dwarf actively pulling material from a companion star.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natural Laboratories for Exploring Extreme Plasma Physics<\/p>\n<p>Although the team\u2019s findings do not rule out other causes of these mysterious cosmic signals, they said their discovery \u201cstrengthens an alternative explanation\u201d that at least some are caused by binary star systems involving white dwarfs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe system is also only the second known long-period radio transient to emit regular X-rays \u2013 and the first where the cause of the regularity has been confirmed,\u201d they explained.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/stunning-first-images-from-james-webb-space-telescope-mark-dawn-of-a-new-era-for-nasa\/\" class=\"mask-img\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/James-Webb-Space-Telescope-120x120.jpg\" class=\"attachment-codetipi-15zine-120-120 size-codetipi-15zine-120-120 wp-post-image lazyload\" alt=\"\"  data- style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 120px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 120\/120;\"\/>\t\t\t<\/a><br \/>\n\t\t&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>When discussing the potential impact of their findings on future research, the team noted that ASKAP J1745-5051 could provide astronomers \u201ca reference point\u201d for understanding other long-period radio transients that have remained uncharacterized.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Rose said that the system could help researchers determine whether other long-period transients are more like pulsars or like white dwarf systems, \u201cacting like a stellar Rosetta stone,\u201d referencing the famous stone tablet that helped modern researchers decipher Egyptian hieroglyphs.
