They govern how small particles \u2013 the building blocks of planets, stars, and ultimately galaxies \u2013 move through space.<\/p>\n<p>We still don&#8217;t know how magnetic fields came to exist in the universe, but we do know they&#8217;re everywhere. Earth itself has a magnetic field that compasses and <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/birds-use-massive-magnetic-maps-to-migrate-and-some-could-cover-the-whole-world-154992\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">migrating birds<\/a> respond to.<\/p>\n<p>With radio telescopes, astronomers can use the light from distant galaxies to illuminate these otherwise invisible areas in space.<\/p>\n<p>In our study, published today in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1017\/pasa.2026.10214\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia<\/a>, we&#8217;ve used Australia&#8217;s most powerful radio telescope to create the largest and most detailed map of cosmic magnetic fields ever made.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/SkyFeaturesLabelledOMagneticFieldMapOfUniverse-642x361.png\" alt=\"The Largest Map of The Universe's Magnetic Fields Is Magnificent\" width=\"642\" height=\"361\" class=\"wp-image-203948 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The new map with some of the visible sky features labelled. (Thomson et al., Publ. Astron. Soc. Aust., 2026)Giant batteries that control galaxies<\/p>\n<p>Magnetic fields greatly vary across the universe. Extremely dense objects, such as neutron stars and  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/black-holes\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73020\" data-postid=\"203935\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">black holes<\/a>, have magnetic fields thousands of billions times stronger than Earth&#8217;s own.<\/p>\n<p>In the space between stars we&#8217;ve also measured magnetic fields a million times weaker than Earth&#8217;s. Despite their weakness, we know these fields are incredibly important for controlling how galaxies evolve. They act like giant batteries and store huge amounts of energy, slowing down or even preventing the formation of new stars.<\/p>\n<p>But to us, magnetic fields are invisible. To find them in space, astronomers are limited to using light from distant stars and galaxies. That&#8217;s because light is a wave of electric and magnetic fields (that&#8217;s where the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/explainer-what-is-the-electromagnetic-spectrum-8046\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">electromagnetic spectrum<\/a>&#8221; gets its name).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/SPICERACSMapOverASKAP-642x426.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"426\" class=\"wp-image-203958 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>This new map works on the principle that light twists as it travels through magnetic fields. This will twist the direction the light is waving \u2013 we call this &#8220;polarisation&#8221;. So, light waving up and down has a different polarisation to light waving side to side.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers can catch this polarisation, especially when looking at the sky in radio waves, which are part of the electromagnetic spectrum.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing the invisible<\/p>\n<p>Australian telescopes have been at the forefront of both radio astronomy and detecting magnetic fields since their first detection.<\/p>\n<p>Murriyang, CSIRO&#8217;s Parkes radio telescope, was the first to detect the twisting polarisation of light from <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/1951084a0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">magnetic fields beyond Earth in 1962<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ever since, astronomers have been pushing to find more and more sources that show us this twisting light. With enough measurements, we can create a map of magnetic fields in the universe.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1780758069_438_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>Each point in the map is an object detected by our telescope, and the object&#8217;s light has illuminated the magnetic fields between us and that distant source. The more sources we detect, the more detailed our map becomes.<\/p>\n<p>The last large map of magnetic fields <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1088\/0004-637X\/702\/2\/1230\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was made in 2009<\/a>. It has not seen a true successor in the intervening 17 years, limiting the depth and scope of the inquiries astronomers have sought to answer.<\/p>\n<p>Across different areas of the universe, including our own Milky Way galaxy, we&#8217;re yet to understand the full strength and structure of cosmic magnetic fields.<\/p>\n<p>Not only do we not know how they came to exist, we don&#8217;t know how they&#8217;ve changed across time since the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/big-bang\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73033\" data-postid=\"203935\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Big Bang<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To begin solving these problems, we need a new class of radio telescope.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_stargazing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/FOMO-1200x628-_Dont-miss-the-next-breakthrough_-cosmic-colourful-642x336.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"336\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-201722 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A telescope built for speed<\/p>\n<p>Radio astronomy is currently undergoing a revolution as <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/in-australia-and-south-africa-construction-has-started-on-the-biggest-radio-observatory-in-earths-history-195818\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the SKA Observatory is being built<\/a> in South Africa and Australia.<\/p>\n<p>In preparation, a generation of telescopes, known as SKA precursors and pathfinders, are already operating around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The ASKAP radio telescope is one of these precursors. Located at Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara, the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory on Wajarri Yamaji Country in Western Australia, it&#8217;s made up of 36 12-metre dishes. These dishes can each see a huge section of the sky at once, giving astronomers an ultrawide view of the universe.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/CSIROASKAP-642x362.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"362\" class=\"wp-image-203960 size-medium\"  \/>CSIRO&#8217;s ASKAP radio telescope at Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara, the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory on Wajarri Yamaji Country. (CSIRO)<\/p>\n<p>The flagship project to make a map of the universe&#8217;s magnetic fields is known as the Polarisation Sky Survey of the Universe&#8217;s Magnetism (<a href=\"https:\/\/possum-survey.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">POSSUM<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In preparation for it, the telescope&#8217;s team produced the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Surveys (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1017\/pasa.2020.41\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RACS<\/a>). It&#8217;s like making an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csiro.au\/en\/news\/all\/news\/2020\/december\/australian-telescope-creates-a-new-atlas-of-the-universe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">atlas of the universe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent versions of these surveys have identified nearly 4 million distant galaxies, with about 2 million having never been seen before.<\/p>\n<p>The magnetic sky<\/p>\n<p>Our new map, called <a href=\"https:\/\/data.csiro.au\/collection\/csiro:58508\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SPICE-RACS<\/a>, has come from a collaboration between the two survey teams.<\/p>\n<p>Our goal was to look towards every galaxy found by RACS, and observe the signs of changing polarisation caused by magnetic fields. Using the latest release of the survey, we found 350,000 galaxies of the original 4 million we could use for this.<\/p>\n<p>Our collection of sources is nearly ten times larger than the previous largest, and five times larger than all observations ever combined together.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, we&#8217;ve obtained the largest and most detailed map to date.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/MagneticFieldsOfUniverseInColour-642x249.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"249\" class=\"wp-image-203954 size-medium\"  \/>This new map, called SPICE-RACS, represents the most detailed map of the Universe&#8217;s hidden magnetic fields. It&#8217;s five times larger than all previous efforts combined. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.csiro.au\/en\/news\/All\/News\/2026\/June\/SPICE-RACS\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alec Thomson et al.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The map has red colours showing magnetic fields pointing towards us, and blue pointing away, like the North and South of a compass.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the swirling and bubbly structure we can see is from our own Milky Way galaxy. In the fine details of the map are the signatures from even more distant parts of the universe.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-reveal-the-oldest-map-of-the-night-sky-ever-made\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scientists Reveal The Oldest Map of The Night Sky Ever Made<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The new map is already enabling new science around the world, and the data is publicly available to the research community <a href=\"https:\/\/data.csiro.au\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the future, we plan to combine all versions of RACS to create an even larger and more detailed map.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the POSSUM project is expected to finish observations by 2030.
