In addition, the album charts 17 of its tracks on the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/charts\/hot-100\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Billboard Hot 100<\/a>, led by the Kehlani collab \u201cSafe,\u201d which debuts at No. 26. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWas the first-week performance of DRAMA less or more than what we expected? And will we get a third Cardi B album before the turn of the decade? Billboard staffers discuss these questions and more below.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t1. Cardi B\u2019s\u00a0AM I THE DRAMA?\u00a0bows atop the Billboard 200 with 200,000 first-week units moved. Is that number lower, higher or about what you would have expected?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tKyle Denis: I\u2019ve had so much time to predict her first week numbers and gauge my expectations, and I\u2019m still unsure. Considering hip-hop\u2019s current commercial pull, the lack of hit single or viral guest verse ahead of the album release, the plethora of variants, and her late-stage promotional blitz, 200,000 first-week units is around where I would have expected AM I THE DRAMA? to land. What\u2019s getting me is how much we had to see Cardi and her team sweat and fight to reach that figure\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCarl Lamarre: Higher, but not by much. I\u2019m proud to say that I was one of the very few who thought that\u00a0Cardi\u00a0could eclipse 175K. She sealed my bet when she went crazy with her promo run going into release week. From doing in-store meet-and-greets to literally kissing babies in Dyckman, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/rb-hip-hop\/cardi-b-am-the-drama-rollout-number-one-1236077818\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">her hustler\u2019s spirit<\/a> is what helped her sprint to a hefty 200k debut.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tJason Lipshutz: Higher. \u201cEternity\u201d doesn\u2019t do justice to a seven-year gap between full-length projects in modern hip-hop, and while\u00a0Cardi\u00a0B has scored multiple chart-toppers since 2018\u2019s Invasion of Privacy, AM I THE DRAMA? arrived without any hit single preceding it. The lack of momentum ultimately didn\u2019t matter, since\u00a0Cardi\u00a0remains such a force of nature as a hip-hop artist and personality. Meanwhile, AM I THE DRAMA? had multiple digital and physical variants and still didn\u2019t fare better than her debut album.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAndrew Unterberger: A little higher, just because there were really no safeguards for Cardi\u2019s performance on this album \u2014\u00a0it didn\u2019t have an advance streaming hit or a real wave of positive momentum that it was coming in on, and 2018 streaming numbers are not being repeated by many artists in 2025. Still, it\u2019s Cardi B: You knew that even in a worst-case scenario she was gonna make six digits, and probably fairly comfortably. And 200,000 is a very nice first-week number for her right now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t2. Much has been made of the seven-year wait between Cardi\u2019s first two official albums. Do you see\u00a0DRAMA\u2019s first-week performance as validation of her taking as long as she did?\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Kyle Denis: Sure, DRAMA\u2018s first-week performance validates the idea that people are interested in Cardi B albums post-Invasion of Privacy. But I\u2019d argue that number could have (and probably would have) been higher with a shorter wait. If she pulled 200k without a hit anywhere near the level of \u201cBodak Yellow\u201d (or even \u201cBe Careful\u201d), imagine what she could have done without having to rebuild her momentum from the ground up mere weeks before the album\u2019s full release. I still think an album dropping after \u201cMoney\u201d\/\u201cPress\u201d in 2019 or \u201cWAP\u201d\/\u201cUp\u201d in 2021 would have pulled stronger (or at least comparable) numbers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCarl Lamarre: Yes and no. It validates why artists should take more time between their albums, especially after coming off a successful debut like\u00a0Invasion. SZA played it masterfully, after segueing between\u00a0Ctrl\u00a0and\u00a0SOS. Despite her five-year gap, she remained relevant, doling out high-profile features like her Grammy-winning collab with Doja on \u201cKiss Me More\u201d to her show-stealing appearance on K. Dot\u2019s \u201cAll the Stars.\u201d Most importantly,\u00a0Cardi\u00a0and SZA thrived off their respective waits because they did what many artists should do when taking time off in-between projects: go out and live life. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tJason Lipshutz: It\u2019s hard to say, since, if\u00a0Cardi\u00a0had released three more albums between Invasion of Privacy and AM I THE DRAMA?, she very well could have had three more No. 1s in her collection. What the debut of DRAMA does validate is the public\u2019s continued interest in all things\u00a0Cardi, from passionate hip-hop fans excited to check out a high-profile new release to curious casuals who want to hear what outrageous things she might say on her latest opus. A seven-year wait for a second album would hamstring most rap headliners, but\u00a0Cardi\u00a0is undeniable enough to break convention and still come out on top.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHeran Mamo: Not really. Invasion of Privacy set the bar really high: a No. 1 debut with 255,000 equivalent album units, two Hot 100 No. 1 hits (lead single \u201cBodak Yellow\u201d and \u201cI Like It,\u201d featuring Bad Bunny and J Balvin) and a Grammy for best rap album. While AM I THE DRAMA? also scored a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 (and already includes two Hot 100 No. 1s), it had a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.billboard.com%2Fmusic%2Fchart-beat%2Fcardi-b-am-i-the-drama-number-one-contenders-1236073881%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7Candrew.unterberger%40billboard.com%7Ce4cdba01838c40db8c2508de004e02bb%7Ce950f25546e44144a778a6ff4f557492%7C0%7C0%7C638948532218455474%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=lj%2FeyPFNedWVeXsz3UtPEmbQ4TocWU%2FD2xcMSshPtt0%3D&amp;reserved=0\">relatively clear runway<\/a> to the top slot this week and earned 55,000 fewer equivalent album units than her debut album despite her meticulous marketing efforts. For an artist of Cardi\u2019s stature \u2013 not just in rap, but in general \u2013 and for an album with this much anticipation building, one could argue that a No. 1 debut and 200,000 units moved in the first week is about what you\u2019d expect if not a bit more. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAndrew Unterberger: It doesn\u2019t necessarily validate it as a strategy, though it does show that it wasn\u2019t too detrimental to her long-term prospects. Some of the hottest rappers of 2018 are barely even mainstream propositions in 2025; Cardi certainly doesn\u2019t have that problem and probably won\u2019t for some time. But could she have had an even stronger sophomore performance if she\u2019d just powered through releasing LP2 in 2021? We\u2019ll never know, but it\u2019s hard not to wonder. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t3. Of the new songs, \u201cSafe\u201d with Kehlani is off to the hottest start. Do you see it becoming a lasting breakout hit from the set? Does the album have a song you think is more likely to be that?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tKyle Denis: I think so. Anecdotally, I\u2019m seeing this being received much more warmly than both \u201cOutside\u201d and \u201cImaginary Playerz.\u201d Of course, it also helps that Kehlani has a rising hit of her own in \u201cFolded,\u201d which should help the momentum of \u201cSafe\u201d on rhythmic radio. I still have my eye on \u201cMagnet,\u201d though. Obviously, there\u2019s also \u201cBodega Baddie,\u201d which very well could become the set\u2019s true monster hit if the right person remixes\u2026 maybe next year\u2019s Super Bowl halftime show performer?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCarl Lamarre: \u201cSafe\u201d is the money record to me. It was an instant winner when I first heard it at her private listening party in August. She and Kehlani have incredible chemistry and thrive off each other well. After the success of \u201cRing,\u201d \u201cSafe\u201d feels like a perfect sequel to their 2018 scorcher, and if anything, it\u2019s a strong enough indicator as to why these two should drop an EP one day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tJason Lipshutz: It\u2019s been interesting to watch listeners gravitate toward \u201cSafe,\u201d a relatively subdued R&amp;B track about romantic longing, instead of more cutthroat fare like \u201cImaginary Playerz,\u201d \u201cHello\u201d and \u201cPretty &amp; Petty\u201d \u2014 but that success speaks to both the quality of \u201cSafe\u201d as a sumptuous listen, as well as the refreshing change-up compared to the tone of\u00a0Cardi\u2019s usual hits. It doesn\u2019t also hurt that Kehlani is enjoying another mainstream moment, as \u201cFolded\u201d continues pushing up the Hot 100. \u201cSafe\u201d is an unlikely breakout hit from\u00a0Cardi\u2019s new album, but the stars have aligned in its favor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHeran Mamo: I\u2019m not surprised that \u201cSafe\u201d caught on first: Cardi featured Kehlani on \u201cRing\u201d from Invasion of Privacy,and the single hit top 40 on the Hot 100, peaking at No. 28. \u201cSafe\u201d is already off to a better start since it debuted at No. 26. But I feel like \u201cPretty &amp; Petty\u201d has a shot of being this album\u2019s breakout hit because of its hook and all the clever, memorable shots she took at Bia,\u00a0starting with the viral first verse: \u201cName five Bia songs, gun pointin\u2019 to your head\/ Bow, I\u2019m dead.\u201d Bia teased that she\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.instagram.com%2Fp%2FDPEpnsrCdvm%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7Candrew.unterberger%40billboard.com%7Ce4cdba01838c40db8c2508de004e02bb%7Ce950f25546e44144a778a6ff4f557492%7C0%7C0%7C638948532218469655%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=9vBdd0W2rAsZSHJl%2BjDiY86CEGD7MQNJTuoZdU7sgTY%3D&amp;reserved=0\">prepared to respond<\/a> on her album BIANCA next month, which will inevitably bring listeners back to Cardi\u2019s track to better understand the timeline of their beef. Cardi\u2019s inextinguishable spirit means she knew she had to come in with that heat after a seven-year gap between projects, so \u201cPretty &amp; Petty\u201d can only burn brighter from here. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAndrew Unterberger: I do feel like \u201cSafe\u201d has all the ingredients for real breakout hit potential, but I\u2019m kept from being too bullish on its prospects after it debuted outside the top 25 on this week\u2019s Hot 100. How it does next week may ultimately be a better indicator of its long-term ceiling \u2014 if it maintains momentum or keeps from slipping too much it should have a good chance to go the distance, if it\u2019s in the chart\u2019s bottom half next week, maybe it\u2019s not the one after all. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t4. After receiving universal acclaim for her 13-track debut album\u00a0Invasion of Privacy, Cardi went much more everything-goes with her 23-track sophomore album, including the inclusion of early-2020s singles \u201cUp\u201d and \u201cWAP\u201d at the end of the tracklist. Do you think that\u00a0DRAMA\u00a0ultimately justifies its length and general inclusivity song-wise?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tKyle Denis: No. After sitting with the album for over a week, there are definitely a handful of songs that should have been left on the cutting room floor, \u201cWhat\u2019s Going On\u201d chief among them. Sure, including \u201cUp\u201d and \u201cWAP\u201d fast-tracked the album to double-platinum status, but she couldn\u2019t even debut all the set\u2019s new songs on the Hot 100. You win some and you lose some! One of the most frustrating parts of an album listening experience is sifting through the duds to find the jewels, who wants to do that after already waiting seven years?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCarl Lamarre: Personally, I\u2019m not a fan of anyone having more than 20 songs on an album anymore.\u00a0Cardi\u00a0did reveal in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/rb-hip-hop\/cardi-b-billboard-cover-story-2025-rb-hip-hop-power-players-1236056447\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> our cover story<\/a> that she recorded over 60 tracks for\u00a0DRAMA, so it\u2019s natural that she would want to include a lot of songs on this project. Of the 23 records overall, I think if she kept it at 15, my letter grade would leap from B\/B+ to a strong A.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tJason Lipshutz: After this amount of waiting, the fact that a new\u00a0Cardi\u00a0B album exists, however overstuffed, is a gift that I won\u2019t take for granted. While AM I THE DRAMA? is not as focused or cohesive as Invasion of Privacy, its extended track list contains plenty of riveting moments \u2014 and, yes, \u201cUp\u201d and \u201cWAP\u201d are years old at this point, but they\u2019re both still great! Normally I would ding a superstar for emptying the clip with a too-long project, but with\u00a0Cardi\u2019s first album since 2018, I\u2019m generally fine with a more-is-more approach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHeran Mamo: Just because there was a long wait for AM I THE DRAMA? doesn\u2019t mean the album needed to be that long. But in the seven years between both albums, Cardi has doled out verses every one of those years, including her third Hot 100 No. 1 and RIAA diamond-certified hit \u201cGirls Like You\u201d with Maroon 5, DJ Snake\u2019s \u201cTaki Taki\u201d also featuring Selena Gomez and Ozuna, and remixes on Glorilla and Megan Thee Stallion\u2019s \u201cWanne Be\u201d and Latto\u2019s \u201cPut It on da Floor.\u201d\u00a0So even if we don\u2019t get another Cardi album this decade, she\u2019ll at least keep us fed with her A-list assists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAndrew Unterberger: Probably not, but that\u2019s OK.
