{"id":481101,"date":"2026-06-07T17:49:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-07T17:49:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/481101\/"},"modified":"2026-06-07T17:49:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-07T17:49:11","slug":"jafar-panahis-one-year-prison-sentence-upheld-in-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/481101\/","title":{"rendered":"Jafar Panahi&#8217;s One-Year Prison Sentence Upheld In Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tFollowing a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/05\/jafar-panahi-court-hearing-iran-may-20-1236914348\/\">retrial<\/a> for his \u201cpropaganda activity against the regime,\u201d Tehran Revolutionary <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/court\/\" id=\"auto-tag_court\" data-tag=\"court\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Court<\/a> has upheld <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/jafar-panahi\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jafar-panahi\" data-tag=\"jafar-panahi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jafar Panahi<\/a>\u2018s <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/12\/jafar-panahi-sentenced-one-year-prison-travel-ban-absentia-1236631954\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">one-year prison sentence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tOn Sunday, the It Was Just An Accident writer\/director\u2019s attorney Mostafa Nili announced that Judge Iman Afshari rejected their objections and fully upheld the in-absentia verdict, on the grounds of making an \u201cunderground and problematic film against the establishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cUnder the initial verdict, Panahi had been sentenced to one year in <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/prison\/\" id=\"auto-tag_prison\" data-tag=\"prison\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prison<\/a> on the charge of engaging in propaganda against the Islamic Republic of <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/iran\/\" id=\"auto-tag_iran\" data-tag=\"iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran<\/a>,\u201d Nili said in an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2026\/06\/07\/cannes-winner-jafar-panahi-faces-prison-and-travel-ban-from-iran\" target=\"_blank\">interview<\/a> with Iran\u2019s Emtedad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe sentence, which came down while Panahi was abroad promoting his Cannes Palme d\u2019Or-winning film, also includes a two-year travel ban, and he\u2019s banned from holding membership with political and social groups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tNili noted that the ruling can be appealed within 20 days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tPanahi has long been in the crosshairs of Iran\u2019s hardline Islamic Republic authorities. Most recently, he spent seven months in the country\u2019s Evin jail after being arrested in July 2023 when he went to the prison to enquire about the the whereabouts of fellow filmmakers Mohammad Rasoulof and Mostafa Al-Ahmad who had been arrested a few days previously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIt was announced a few days later that the Iranian authorities had decided to reactivate a six-year sentence originally meted out to Panahi in 2010 alongside a 20-year filmmaking and travel ban.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe charges and sentence were connected to his attendance of a funeral in 2009 of a student shot dead in the Green Revolution and his later attempt to shoot a feature set against the backdrop of the uprising.
