{"id":481998,"date":"2026-06-08T08:37:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-08T08:37:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/481998\/"},"modified":"2026-06-08T08:37:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-08T08:37:09","slug":"peterborough-litter-pickers-fund-and-install-new-bins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/481998\/","title":{"rendered":"Peterborough litter pickers fund and install new bins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Peterborough Litter Wombles was formed five years ago and now has about 500 active volunteers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Machin said the group had collected more than 15,000 bags of litter since then, but claimed that was &#8220;only the tip of the iceberg&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He said he was aware of funding challenges facing local authorities but added he would &#8220;love the council to do more&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Stephen Eastman, founder of another local group called the Independent Review Committee on Debris, praised the latest initiative and said other parts of Peterborough would benefit from them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Chris Wiggin, a councillor with a responsibility for the environment, said any new bins would be &#8220;subject to costs and installation requirements&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Alongside this we are focusing on developing educational activities, including organising regular litter picking activities at schools, to try and reduce the problem of litter occurring in the first place,&#8221; the Liberal Democrat councillor added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Peterborough Litter Wombles was formed five years ago and now has about 500 active volunteers.
