It&#8217;s not the only probe in the Mars morgue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-ec0a603d-e2cc-49e6-a48f-7cc4c653a00c\">The Mars graveyard just welcomed another corpse.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday (June 3), NASA officially declared its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/nasas-maven-mars-orbiter-is-officially-dead-after-months-of-radio-silence\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/nasas-maven-mars-orbiter-is-officially-dead-after-months-of-radio-silence\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/nasas-maven-mars-orbiter-is-officially-dead-after-months-of-radio-silence\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MAVEN orbiter dead<\/a>, closing the book on a highly successful mission that studied the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16903-mars-atmosphere-climate-weather.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16903-mars-atmosphere-climate-weather.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16903-mars-atmosphere-climate-weather.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Red Planet&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a> for nearly a dozen years.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-ec0a603d-e2cc-49e6-a48f-7cc4c653a00c-2\">The MAVEN team didn&#8217;t script this ending; the orbiter went dark without warning this past December, and it <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/after-a-month-of-no-answer-nasa-will-try-hailing-its-silent-maven-mars-orbiter-today\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/after-a-month-of-no-answer-nasa-will-try-hailing-its-silent-maven-mars-orbiter-today\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/after-a-month-of-no-answer-nasa-will-try-hailing-its-silent-maven-mars-orbiter-today\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">remained silent<\/a> despite repeated attempts to hail it. But MAVEN&#8217;s ultimate fate would have been roughly the same even if its handlers had been able to shut it down in a controlled fashion.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-c98590c4-c8f3-4960-93f7-a5162a19633c\">&#8220;The nominal plan for disposing of the spacecraft at the end of its mission was just to leave it in that nominal orbit, where it would remain for a period of 50 to 100 years before entering the Martian atmosphere,&#8221; MAVEN Project Manager Mike Moreau, of NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/goddard-space-flight-center.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/goddard-space-flight-center.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/goddard-space-flight-center.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Goddard Space Flight Center<\/a> in Greenbelt, Maryland, said during a press conference on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So, the spacecraft&#8217;s basically in a configuration, in an orbit, that&#8217;s very similar to what it would have been if the mission had ended nominally,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s what happens to dead <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a> orbiters: They generally keep circling for a half-century or more, until the planet&#8217;s thin atmosphere drags them down and burns them up. Or the end could come considerably sooner, if they&#8217;re unlucky enough to slam into one of their brethren or into <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20346-phobos-moon.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20346-phobos-moon.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20346-phobos-moon.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Phobos<\/a> or <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20345-deimos-moon.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20345-deimos-moon.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20345-deimos-moon.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Deimos<\/a>, the two moons of Mars. (Indeed, MAVEN had to perform a maneuver in February 2017 to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/nasa-orbiter-steers-clear-of-mars-moon-phobos\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/nasa-orbiter-steers-clear-of-mars-moon-phobos\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">avoid a potential collision<\/a> with Phobos.)<\/p>\n<p>Some of these probes may already have been pulled down, considering the long timeline of Mars exploration. (It&#8217;s tough to track unresponsive spacecraft in Mars orbit, so we generally don&#8217;t know which dead ones are still aloft.)<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a Mars graveyard on the surface, too. Among the many robots being buried by the wind-blown red dirt are NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/mars-rovers-spirit-opportunity-20th-anniversary\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/mars-rovers-spirit-opportunity-20th-anniversary\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/mars-rovers-spirit-opportunity-20th-anniversary\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spirit and Opportunity<\/a> rovers, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/mars-helicopter-ingenuity-opened-red-planet-skies-exploration\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/mars-helicopter-ingenuity-opened-red-planet-skies-exploration\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/mars-helicopter-ingenuity-opened-red-planet-skies-exploration\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ingenuity helicopter<\/a> and Pathfinder lander (which Mark Watney finds and uses in the book and movie &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/entertainment\/space-movies-shows\/the-martian-is-10-years-old-looking-back-at-sci-fis-answer-to-the-shawshank-redemption\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/entertainment\/space-movies-shows\/the-martian-is-10-years-old-looking-back-at-sci-fis-answer-to-the-shawshank-redemption\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/entertainment\/space-movies-shows\/the-martian-is-10-years-old-looking-back-at-sci-fis-answer-to-the-shawshank-redemption\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Martian<\/a>&#8220;), and Zhurong, a rover that was part of China&#8217;s Tianwen 1 mission.<\/p>\n<p>Just two Mars surface craft remain operational today: NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17963-mars-curiosity.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17963-mars-curiosity.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17963-mars-curiosity.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Curiosity<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/perseverance-rover-mars-2020-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/perseverance-rover-mars-2020-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/perseverance-rover-mars-2020-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Perseverance<\/a> rovers, which landed in August 2012 and February 2021, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>But let&#8217;s end with an appreciation of MAVEN (whose name is short for &#8220;Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution&#8221;). The probe&#8217;s data has helped scientists better understand Mars&#8217; dramatic transition from a relatively warm and wet world to the frigid desert we know today.<\/p>\n<p>That change occurred because Mars lost most of its once-thick atmosphere. (The planet&#8217;s air is now just 1% as dense as that of Earth at sea level.) Thanks to MAVEN, we know that loss was driven by the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22215-solar-wind.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22215-solar-wind.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22215-solar-wind.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar wind<\/a> and occurred <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/31031-mars-atmosphere-discovery-nasa-maven.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/31031-mars-atmosphere-discovery-nasa-maven.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/31031-mars-atmosphere-discovery-nasa-maven.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">between 4.2 billion and 3.7 billion years ago<\/a> \u2014 around the time that life was getting started here on Earth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Mars graveyard just welcomed another corpse.
