{"id":484076,"date":"2026-06-09T15:19:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-09T15:19:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/484076\/"},"modified":"2026-06-09T15:19:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-09T15:19:08","slug":"natalie-portman-justine-triet-oppose-boycott-of-israeli-director-nadav-lapid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/484076\/","title":{"rendered":"Natalie Portman, Justine Triet Oppose Boycott of Israeli Director Nadav Lapid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNatalie Portman and French directors Justine Triet (Anatomy of a Fall) and Jacques Audiard (Emilia Perez) have joined an open letter condemning the cultural boycott of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/inside-nadiv-lapid-battle-to-release-israeli-satire-yes-1236542263\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Israeli director Nadav Lapid<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tLapid was set to attend the Marseille <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/international\/\" id=\"auto-tag_international_1\" data-tag=\"international\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International<\/a> Film Festival in July as part of the jury, but pulled out following pressure from pro-Palestinian filmmakers, who threatened to withdraw their films from selection if Lapid took part.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe Israeli director is a sharp critic of Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s government and has lived in France since 2021. His last feature, Yes, is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/yes-review-director-nadav-lapid-israel-october-7-1236216610\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">scathing satire <\/a>on the radicalization of contemporary Israeli society and the complicity of the country\u2019s artistic community in the killings in Gaza and the West Bank. But because the film was partially financed by the Israeli Film Fund, some pro-Palestinian activists have accused Lapid of complicity with the Israeli government and called for a boycott of him and his work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOn Monday, more than 350 leading figures in the French film industry, including producers Sa\u00efd Ben Sa\u00efd (Elle) and Judith Lou L\u00e9vy (Dahomey), along with directors St\u00e9phane Demoustier (The Great Arch) and Mati Diop (Atlantics, Dahomey), signed an open letter, published in French newspaper Le Monde calling the cultural boycott of Lapid \u201can intellectual failure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThat Israel\u2019s greatest dissident artist [who] tirelessly denounces the fascist and colonialist tendencies of his government and its criminal moral failings in films that have won awards worldwide, should be forced to withdraw from a French festival should alarm us and mobilize us beyond this absurdity,\u201d the letter reads. \u201cIt should alert us to the obvious truth: whatever crimes their state may commit, no one can be reduced to a passport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe letter\u2019s signatores argue that Lapid, like dissident Russian or Iranian filmmakers, should not be held accountable for \u201ccrimes committed by governments they are often the most fervent critics of.\u201d Continuing to invite these artists to festivals, they say, puts more political pressure on authoritarian regiemes than boycotting them.
