Simon\u00a0Stiell\u00a0addressed\u00a0the opening of the\u00a0UN June Climate Meetings<\/a>\u00a0in Bonn, Germany\u00a0\u2013\u00a0an important step\u00a0ahead of the COP31\u00a0climate conference<\/a> in\u00a0Antalya,\u00a0Turkiye\u00a0this November.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cTackling the global climate crisis is the hardest, but\u00a0most\u00a0important thing humanity has ever tried to do together,\u201d he\u00a0said<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is worth\u00a0doing, because\u00a0we have no choice.\u00a0Every economy and population depends on it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Key meetings\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Bonn meetings\u00a0take place annually\u00a0in the lead-up to\u00a0COP conferences,\u00a0the latest of which was held in Bel\u00e9m, Brazil,\u00a0last\u00a0November.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Over the next two weeks, delegates will advance technical and political work as well as review progress on existing commitments.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The mid-year negotiations are being held against a backdrop of intensifying\u00a0climate impacts and\u00a0mounting pressures on\u00a0countries linked to energy security, food\u00a0systems\u00a0and economic uncertainty.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Focus will be on issues such as adaptation, finance, the just transition to renewable energy, agriculture and food security, and follow-up to\u00a0the first global\u00a0stocktake<\/a>\u00a0towards achieving\u00a0the Paris Agreement on climate change<\/a>, concluded\u00a0at\u00a0COP28 in Dubai in\u00a0December 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018We are not where we need to be\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr.\u00a0Stiell\u00a0noted\u00a0that \u201cclimate action and the global economy are moving\u201d although progress\u00a0remains\u00a0insufficient.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not where we need to be.\u00a0But we are somewhere we have never been before,\u201d he said, adding that this\u00a0hard work\u00a0is starting to pay off.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople the world over\u00a0need\u00a0this process to keep delivering, and at increasing speed and scale,\u201d\u00a0he said, adding that \u201cwe don’t\u202fhave time\u202fto re-open past debates or renegotiate commitments already made.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fossil fuel dependence\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said people who are denied the benefits of climate action are already paying the price\u00a0as deadly heat, El Ni\u00f1o impacts and\u00a0\u201ca fossil fuel cost crisis\u201d sparked by the war in the Middle East impact households and economies worldwide.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s crystal clear:\u00a0continuing our fossil fuel dependency means continuing to import inflation and economic instability, while exporting energy security, sovereignty and policy autonomy, leaving economies and communities exposed to climate disasters, taking a wrecking ball to lives and prosperity everywhere,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Focus on delivery\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr.\u00a0Stiell\u00a0urged countries to \u201cgo further, faster\u201d by delivering fully on obligations and plans made under\u00a0the Paris Agreement<\/a>, the 2015 treaty\u00a0that\u00a0seeks to limit global temperature rise to 1.5\u00b0C above pre-industrial levels.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Countries must first streamline the\u00a0Paris\u00a0process as \u201call institutions must continuously evolve and improve.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

They must advance key issues such as\u00a0the Global Goal on Adaptation<\/a>, the Bel\u00e9m Adaptation Indicators, delivering the outcomes of the first global\u00a0stocktake,\u00a0developing the just transition mechanism and\u00a0finance, including the climate finance work\u00a0programme\u00a0to the Adaptation Fund.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Finally, they \u201cmust bring the work of this process closer to the real economy.\u201d\u00a0In this regard, he\u00a0pointed to the\u00a0Global Climate Action Agenda<\/a>\u00a0as a way to\u00a0bring\u00a0together governments, companies, innovators, investors, cities, regions and civil society to support implementation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Make it count\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr.\u00a0Stiell\u00a0also acknowledged calls by governments to make the UN climate process more efficient and easier to navigate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said the Secretariat was listening to concerns about mandates, access to climate finance and the reporting burden on Parties, including through wider efforts under the\u00a0UN80 reform initiative<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Secretariat will always be there to advise and support you,\u201d he said. \u201cBut ultimately, it\u2019s your process, and your decisions to make.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

He urged delegates to use the\u00a0Bonn meeting\u00a0to address major challenges such as energy security, food security, waste\u00a0reduction, strengthening the resilience of\u00a0cities\u00a0and tackling methane\u00a0emissions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
