We debate <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5748374\/carbon-markets-paris-agreement\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">carbon markets<\/a>, map <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6259746\/colder-winter-storms-climate-change-polar-vortex\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wind patterns<\/a>, and calculate <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7333440\/2025-carbon-emission-record-high\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">atmospheric emissions<\/a>. Yet one of the most transformative, sophisticated solutions to climate change available to us is not engineered in a laboratory\u2014it is the living soil right beneath our feet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">For far too long, humanity has treated soil like dirt: an inert and seemingly inexhaustible resource to be relentlessly plowed, sprayed, or paved over. What is often overlooked is that soil is humanity\u2019s lifeline. Each handful of healthy soil contains more living organisms than there are people on the planet. We rely on it for nearly all our food, for climate stability, and for stopping most of the world\u2019s rainwater from simply running back out to sea.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/cep\/events\/un-environment-event\/world-environment-day-2026\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">World Environment Day<\/a> is the perfect moment to celebrate soil and to recognize that land health is entirely inseparable from climate action.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Soil as climate armour<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Far from being just \u201cdirt,\u201d living <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainability.colostate.edu\/humannature\/soil-carbon-the-climate-solution-were-misunderstanding\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">soil<\/a> is an incredible <a href=\"https:\/\/earth.org\/soil-is-bigger-carbon-sink-than-previously-thought-report\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">carbon sink<\/a>\u2014storing <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/news\/fao-maps-carbon-stocks-in-soil\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">nearly twice<\/a> the carbon held in the atmosphere. If we treat it well, it could store even more, making soil one of our most powerful allies in tackling the climate crisis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Yet, soil degradation causes carbon to be released back into the atmosphere, adding to the climate crisis.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Soils are eroding <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.geoscienceworld.org\/gsa\/geology\/article-abstract\/43\/2\/171\/131810\/Quantifying-human-impacts-on-rates-of-erosion-and\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">up to 100 times faster<\/a> than they are being formed. Around a third of the world\u2019s soils are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/evaluation\/highlights\/detail\/soils\/en\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">already degraded<\/a>, though the extent of the problem may be underestimated because of intensive fertilizer use.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Beyond capturing emissions, healthy soil acts as an armor against climate change through adaptation and resilience. A landscape rich in organic matter functions as a <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/04\/28\/what-has-gone-wrong-with-architecture\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">living sponge<\/a>. It absorbs torrential rains to mitigate devastating floods. It also retains moisture to buffer communities against prolonged droughts\u2014vital for human security as temperatures rise.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">When soil is stripped of its structural health, massive nutrient and chemical fertilizers run off into our waterways and out to sea. This pollution <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/cep\/nutrients\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fuels<\/a> the catastrophic sargassum blooms, which can suffocate Caribbean and coastal tourism and expand marine \u201cdead zones.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">True climate resilience requires recognizing that the health of people, animals, and the environment is deeply <a href=\"https:\/\/openknowledge.fao.org\/items\/fddae6a2-e7ef-4a2a-ad54-2463dbbb0b32\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">interconnected<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shifting from depletion to regeneration<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">To heal our soil, we must transform our food systems and embrace nature-friendly practices.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">By rebuilding soil life, cutting unnecessary chemical inputs, and bringing animals back into well-managed mixed farming systems, we can restore fertility to the land. Fields once treated as lifeless surfaces can again become living systems\u2014storing carbon, holding water, and producing food in harmony with nature.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Transitioning to nature-friendly alternatives is both necessary and increasingly feasible. Practices such as <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/collections\/ecopreneurs\/6242262\/brazil-drought-farming-rain-forests\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">agroforestry<\/a>, cover cropping, and diversified crop rotations provide a strong foundation for more resilient food systems. What is required to make this possible are enabling policies, targeted investment, and support for farmers managing short-term transition costs. With the right measures, these approaches can deliver long-term gains for productivity, ecosystem health, and resilience.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The economic and social imperative<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Protecting the soil is not a niche environmental luxury\u2014it is a crucial investment in global macroeconomic stability. <a href=\"https:\/\/philip-ciwf.medium.com\/how-humanitys-garden-of-eden-has-been-trashed-within-a-lifetime-9a1bc23cf201\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Land degradation<\/a> is a quiet driver of food price hikes, market volatility, and severe supply chain fragility. When ecosystems fragment, the resulting fallout compromises food and water security, directly affecting human migration and geopolitical stability.<br \/>What\u2019s more, the benefits of land restoration fall most significantly on rural populations, smallholders, and mobile pastoralists: the very communities most vulnerable to climate shocks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">To build a resilient future, we must learn from Indigenous peoples, whose traditional stewardship reminds us that humanity thrives when working within nature&#8217;s boundaries, not beyond them.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">For the future health of humanity, soil needs to go from an overlooked commodity to a strategic global asset. Governments must lead on integrating comprehensive soil health and land restoration as central to food systems transformation. It should be included in national climate adaptation and biodiversity action plans to create clear policy alignment.\u00a0<br \/>Simultaneously, the private sector can play its part by realigning global supply chains, actively rewarding and financing agricultural practices that protect ecosystems rather than stripping them for short-term yield.<br \/>Ultimately, this is about recognizing a simple truth: we are part of nature, not separate from it. The health of our soil underpins the health of our food, our animals, our ecosystems, and ourselves. When we restore the ground beneath us, we begin to restore that balance. In doing so, we move closer to a future shaped not by depletion, but by regeneration\u2014one rooted in both resilience and compassion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"We often look to the sky for climate solutions.
