ZURICH, June 15 (Reuters) – Institutional investors are looking more closely at private market investments after recent turbulence at firms such \u200cas Partners Group, Swiss pension fund consultants said.<\/p>\n
Partners Group capped withdrawals \u200cfrom a major evergreen private equity fund this month after increased redemptions, unsettling markets. A similar \u200bmove by Blackstone in a large private credit fund underscored broader concerns.<\/p>\n
Investors have been focused on problems appearing in loans by private credit funds run by big asset managers, and have been scrutinizing valuations, lending standards and how software \u200ccompanies can handle AI challenges.<\/p>\n
Private \u2060market investments have lagged tech-driven stock gains, prompting exits, the consultants said.<\/p>\n
Outflows have been driven mainly by retail investors, who \u2060generally react faster to volatility and short-term performance.<\/p>\n
Institutional investors are not exiting, but are becoming choosier about their strategies, the consultants said.<\/p>\n
Private wealth clients account for \u200babout a \u200bfifth of Partners Group’s $185 billion in assets \u200bunder management. The firm confirmed \u200cits outlook for 2026 despite the turmoil.<\/p>\n
Institutional investors have so far maintained their allocations, but in some cases could delay new commitments, said Stephanie Spozio at consultancy Prevanto.<\/p>\n
But sentiment is becoming more wary, and investors are looking at products more closely, particularly their liquidity terms, said Romano Gruber of consultancy PPCmetrics.<\/p>\n
Thomas \u200cBreitenmoser at pension advisor Complementa said one \u200bor two clients are nervous and asking about \u200bPartners Group.<\/p>\n
Some pension funds may \u200bultimately cut private markets exposure by allowing existing programmes to \u200crun out without reinvesting, he added.<\/p>\n
There \u200bare concerns about \u200bprivate credit, where some funds were sold on the basis of easy liquidity terms despite doubts about their feasibility, said Benita von Lindeiner of \u200bc-alm.<\/p>\n
Performance differences among managers \u200cin private markets were becoming noticeable, she said.<\/p>\n
“In the coming weeks, \u200bthe wheat will be separated from the chaff,” she said.<\/p>\n
