{"id":497148,"date":"2026-06-17T10:17:33","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T10:17:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/497148\/"},"modified":"2026-06-17T10:17:33","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T10:17:33","slug":"development-sprawl-is-cutting-off-mountain-lion-habitat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/497148\/","title":{"rendered":"Development Sprawl Is Cutting Off Mountain Lion Habitat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Los Angeles County has approved a 1,300-acre development near Castaic Lake in a region where mountain lions already struggle to move through roads, sprawl, and shrinking habitat.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/biologicaldiversity.org\/w\/news\/press-releases\/lawsuit-challenges-los-angeles-zombie-project-that-would-destroy-creek-block-puma-path-2026-04-23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Center for Biological Diversity<\/a> sued the county over the Northlake project, warning that it would pave over a stream and block a critical wildlife path for mountain lions and other animals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/signalscv.com\/2026\/05\/northlake-plan-sued-again-over-environmental-concerns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Signal<\/a> described the project as a major development on more than 1,300 acres near Castaic, with renewed legal challenges over environmental concerns.<\/p>\n<p>This fight comes at a critical time for California\u2019s big cats.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: none;\" alt=\"Mountain lion resting on a large moss-covered rock, one front leg hanging over the edge in a rugged natural setting.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/mountain-lion-habitat-5.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nSouthern California Mountain Lions Need Room To Move<\/p>\n<p>In February 2026, the <a href=\"https:\/\/wildlife.ca.gov\/News\/Archive\/california-fish-and-game-commissionfinds-cesa-protections-warranted-forsouthern-californiaandcentral-coastmountain-lion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">California Department of Fish and Wildlife<\/a> announced that state officials found threatened-species protections warranted for mountain lion populations in parts of Southern California and the Central Coast.<\/p>\n<p>These cats are not declining because of one threat. They are boxed in by many.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/environment\/2026\/02\/facing-extinction-vortex-california-grants-new-protections-to-more-mountain-lions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CalMatters<\/a> described mountain lions trapped by development, killed by vehicles, harmed by rat poison, and threatened by inbreeding. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clawonline.org\/protect-local-mountain-lions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Citizens for Los Angeles Wildlife<\/a> says local populations in the Santa Monica and San Gabriel mountains face habitat loss, vehicle strikes, rodenticides, and genetic isolation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: none;\" alt=\"Mountain lion in side profile, lit by warm sunlight, staring ahead against a softly blurred brown rocky background.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/mountain-lion-habitat-6.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nConnectivity Is Not Optional<\/p>\n<p>Southern California has already recognized the need to reconnect habitat. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/apr\/25\/california-wildlife-crossing-construction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Guardian<\/a> reported that the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing over the 101 freeway is nearing completion and is designed to help mountain lions, bobcats, lizards, and other animals move through a fractured landscape.<\/p>\n<p>Northlake raises the same question in another place: will land-use decisions protect wildlife movement, or close another door?<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles County should rescind the project approval, require a new environmental review, protect the creek corridor, account for western spadefoot habitat, and preserve movement between wildlands.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: none;\" alt=\"Mountain lion moving quietly through green brush, head lowered and eyes focused forward.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/mountain-lion-habitat-4.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Mountain lions cannot survive on isolated islands of habitat.
