Amanda Seyfried has been talking about the role that eluded her \u2013 that of Joni Mitchell in a biopic that never happened. <\/p>\n

The actress has given an in-depth interview to GQ magazine<\/a>, in which she explains what happened with that and her appearance playing the dulcimer on the Jimmy Fallon Show last year which went viral.<\/p>\n

You may recall that Seyfried went on the show last year and sang a pitch perfect version of California from Mitchell\u2019s classic Blue album<\/a>. Fallon himself confirmed that \u201cIt was one of the most viral videos that ever went out of our show in the history of our show.\u201d<\/p>\n

And it won her praise from many \u2018proper\u2019 musician, including Beck, whom she literally bumped into on the Upper West Side in New York.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was walking a block. He jumped out of a car and he was like, \u2018You were so great. My daughter has been learning to play that.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018This is fucking great.\u2019 And we had a great conversation. I don\u2019t know him, I\u2019ve never met him before. Fucking musician Beck? Like, thank you, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n

Seyfried learned to play the dulcimer during lockdown whilst she was preparing for the Mitchell role. She also got to spend some quality time with Joni herself at her LA home.<\/p>\n

\u201cI sat on the floor petting one of the dogs,\u201d she recalls. \u201cShe told me a lot of stories.\u201d Then Mitchell put on Blue. \u201cShe\u2019s like, \u2018We\u2019ll put on the album and light a fire. After we listened to the album, she\u2019s like, \u2018It\u2019s sparse, isn\u2019t it?\u2019\u201d At this point in the interview the 40-year-old actress feigns fainting. \u201cIt\u2019s perfect!\u201d<\/p>\n

Seyfried was diligent in her preparation and learned to play the whole of Blue. \u201cThe day that I finished learning the last song on the album, (The Last Time I Saw) Richard\u2019, I fucking wept. I felt like a bona fide musician, like I belong here. I felt like I had put my own flag on the top of the mountain. Because it was a fucking mountain, I tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n

But of course that version of the biopic never happened, and now Cameron Crowe is directing a different one, without Seyfried<\/a>. \u201cApparently a lot of people reached out to Cameron Crowe and were like, \u2018What the fuck are you doing, dude?\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cI don\u2019t know what he said, but from my knowledge, his version is, she\u2019s really young and then she\u2019s older.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, at least Seyfried is now proficient on the dulcimer.
