More than 40 years after joining Iron Maiden<\/a>, singer Bruce Dickinson\u2019s voice is as powerful as ever. However, the same can\u2019t be said for some of his contemporaries, and the metal frontman believes those vocalists are cheating their fans.<\/p>\n

In a cover story for Kerrang!<\/a>, Dickinson discussed drummer Nicko McBrain\u2019s decision to retire from touring<\/a> with Iron Maiden at the end of 2024 due to the physical rigors that come with the job. Dickinson said he respected McBrain for knowing when to walk away, something he thinks some of his fellow singers should think about.<\/p>\n

Dickinson, who made Consequence\u2018s list of the 100 Best Vocalists of All Time<\/a>, mentioned that he recently had an \u201cargument with a journalist\u201d who told the Iron Maiden frontman that he should keep on going even if he reaches a point where he\u2019s not at his best.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018Look, there are loads of singers whose voices are shot and everybody knows it.\u2019 He goes, \u2018Yeah, but they\u2019re legends.\u2019 They\u2019re not fucking legends. They\u2019re people who can\u2019t sing anymore. When they were singing, they were legends. When they can\u2019t sing anymore, they\u2019re not legends anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cThat\u2019s the end of that, the brutal truth. I couldn\u2019t go onstage if I didn\u2019t think I could do it. I don\u2019t know how people get onstage when they can\u2019t do it anymore. Obviously, it\u2019s their life, but it\u2019s not my way.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked if he\u2019s worried that day might come for him, Dickinson responded, \u201cNo. It\u2019s just a fact of life that one day it may or may not happen. You take each day as it comes, and you try to give the best performance of your life every night. That\u2019s the rules of the game.\u201d<\/p>\n
