Ultimately, even though there is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/lifestyle\/food\/kishwar-chowdhury-cookbook-smoke-rice-water-masterchef-bengali-culture-20260609-p6050b.html\" class=\"sc-cqkqYi dZDrvo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">food<\/a> at home that is perfectly useful, the temptation of a \u2018sweat treat\u2019 and convenience overcomes the \u2018right thing\u2019 to do, and we take what feels\u00a0 [like the] more rewarding option.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Andrew Woodward\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/6869de34afbcd40bfb676aa191a6281ceb4ec81357353b6723903e63e26e9335.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Andrew Woodward is a personal finance expert.\u00a0Kyle Spyrides<\/p>\n<p>I most definitely subscribe to this mentality, but as of late I\u2019ve been noticing my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/lifestyle\/food\/mcdonalds-mcsmart-meal-revived-three-new-menu-items-20260617-p607ga.html\" class=\"sc-cqkqYi dZDrvo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expenditure<\/a> getting higher and higher.<\/p>\n<p>I decided to stop turning a blind eye and instead track my purchases to see how much I really am spending on these frivolities.<\/p>\n<p>In my case, I\u2019ll be including not only small treats but also meals eaten at restaurants, as I also consider that a \u201ctreat\u201d \u2013 especially when there\u2019s food already in the fridge.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sweet treat tracker<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday, June 16<\/p>\n<p>7:10 am &#8211; I didn\u2019t think the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/lifestyle\/food\/best-ice-cream-australia-2026-single-serve-20260528-p601ux.html\" class=\"sc-cqkqYi dZDrvo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">treats<\/a> would start so early, but my walk to the train station had me absolutely frozen from the inside out, and before I knew it, I found myself ordering a flat white from the nearby caf\u00e9 to warm myself up before hopping on the train to work.<\/p>\n<p>Price:\u00a0 $6.50\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>11:10 &#8211; After a few hours of working hard, I decided to grab a hash brown from McDonald\u2019s after seeing a deal for $1 on the app.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While I was there, I also grabbed a bottle of Coke from a nearby Sushi Hub because I thought it would be the same price as one from the Woolies Metro across the road. It actually ended up being 70 cents less! Score!!<\/p>\n<p>Price: $1 + $4.20 = $5.20\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Total for Tuesday: $11.70<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"McDonalds hash brown\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/0d7cd62e8e500aca8eb15bb9c793a6cbe0e6ddc503ebb92080e242551a00517e.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">$1 to start with isn&#8217;t too bad&#8230;\u00a0Madhurima Haque<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday, June 17\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>12 pm &#8211; I made the grave mistake of dropping by a Woolworths Metro while hungry and ended up with a spontaneous snack haul.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I went in to grab a Dare Iced coffee (anyone who knows me knows I\u2019m a fiend for them).<\/p>\n<p>But I couldn\u2019t pass up some freshly made grilled salmon<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/australia-news\/today-show\/today-s-take-on-the-delicious-dot-cake-trend-20260610-p605h5.html\" class=\"sc-cqkqYi dZDrvo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> sushi<\/a> (my favourite kind), as well as a packet of chips for later, and a packet of waffles that I figured I could heat up for breakfast in the office kitchen\u2019s toaster for the next few days.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Price: $34.29<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mac and Cheese and hot chocolate\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/c2b2f6a1c71f10cb3d2c11769da838802964bfd9c9e4c92ce8916c95e9d52ef5.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Now I finally had a chance.\u00a0Madhurima Haque<\/p>\n<p>4 pm &#8211; After my shift finished, I decided to go into the city and have a look at a dress I had my eye on. But as I exited the station, I couldn\u2019t help but notice that one of the hottest new venues in Sydney, Park Street Diner, looked quite empty before the dinner rush.<\/p>\n<p>I had been wanting to visit for ages, but every time I passed there were always huge crowds. Now was my chance.<\/p>\n<p>I went in only wanting to order a side of their mac and cheese, but when the man sitting next to me had a mug piled high with whipped cream and marshmallows, I couldn\u2019t resist getting a hot chocolate. And let me tell you, sipping from the mug of delectable hot chocolate while sitting at the bar of an almost empty diner made me feel like a character from a movie<\/p>\n<p>Price: $23.85<\/p>\n<p>Total for Wednesday: $58.14<\/p>\n<p>Thursday, June 18\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>5:21 pm &#8211; I made plans with my friend to have an early dinner in the city, so I restrained myself when it came to sweet treats today.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Price: $24.23 <\/p>\n<p>We had a Tom Yum Noodle Soup, and I got a Coke from Woolies afterwards to wash it down.<\/p>\n<p>Price: $4.45<\/p>\n<p>Total for Thursday: $28.68<\/p>\n<p>Friday, June 19\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>11 am &#8211; I took my cat to the vet and decided to visit the little cafe nearby while I waited. I knew it would take a while and I felt bad for only ordering a coffee, so I decided to get a light brunch of birria tacos as well. As I tapped my card I realised it actually ended up being quite a lot \u2013 but then again, the price didn\u2019t hold a candle to the vet bill I had to pay.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Price: $25.45\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>7:13pm &#8211; For dinner I ended up getting good old Maccas as there was a deal on the app. After running around all day, I had no energy to cook.<\/p>\n<p>Price: $17.85<\/p>\n<p>Total for Friday: $43.30<\/p>\n<p>Saturday June 20\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>1 pm &#8211; I made plans to grab a late lunch with a friend, but before that I ran some errands. And if course, we can\u2019t run errands without a coffee in hand. I opted for a speciality coffee this time, a Belgian Chocolate iced mocha, and it was every bit divine as it sounds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Price: $8.09<\/p>\n<p>4 pm &#8211; I ended up choosing steak for dinner \u2013 and though I knew it would set me back, I hadn\u2019t had it in ages, and I was really craving it over the last two weeks. I got my favourite, salted caramel and white chocolate.<\/p>\n<p>Price: $6.90\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Total price for Saturday: $64.99<\/p>\n<p>Sunday and Monday are the days I work from home, and so mercifully I don\u2019t tend to spend any money. <\/p>\n<p>Total for the week: $206.81\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, if you add up the full meals, they come to$110.08, and so the amount spent on small treats themselves comes to $96.73 (here you witness my last-ditch attempt to try to justify my spending).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, it turns out that I\u2019m spending a large chunk of my weekly pay on things that give me fleeting joy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But if you asked me to give them up, I would undoubtedly hesitate. So often, they are the things that keep me motivated throughout the day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Birria tacos and a coffee for breakfast\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/e51a3f162284a23a59fee7cf204a0803b6bd5390591130b4c1471f40c157cf2c.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">As soon as I tapped my phone I realised what happened.\u00a0Madhurima Haque<\/p>\n<p>Like many Gen Zs, I have given up on the dream of the white picket fence, the fancy car, or the yearly holiday. I don\u2019t have any big purchase goals I need to budget for, and so I have filled my daily life with tiny hits of dopamine that come from the purchases.<\/p>\n<p>This also means that I don\u2019t have a clear budget. I never believed in them; I always thought they were too strict for the flexible nature of life.<\/p>\n<p>Woodward believes the same and shares that having a restrictive budget can have the adverse effect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA budget doesn\u2019t create an environment for success with money, and as a result, money leaks out of the budget without even knowing it. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Iced coffee\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/23267e9b1a95810f64c0ef330754262f55761a2a37330714fd1b8a568d2f3cd4.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Can&#8217;t run errands without a coffee in hand!\u00a0Madhurima Haque<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe solution is having a plan for your money that directs it where it needs to be when it needs to be there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe plan structure, which is your bank accounts, will then show how you are tracking and keep you on target,\u201d he explains.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But this doesn\u2019t mean you can be without discipline, he adds. Doing things like wanting to save and then regularly treating yourself is contradictory and confusing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have put a money plan in place with some rules, and regularly break them, then yes you are doing more harm than good. You are effectively telling yourself, your money mindset, that the rules don\u2019t really matter, and in the long term they stop being rules or guardrails and just become something you tell yourself you have, but they do nothing for you.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is nothing wrong with having exceptions, but when they are an exception, you tend to recognise that fact and know that you have rules that you intend to follow and don\u2019t let an infrequent slip or allowance derail the money plan and rules.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then again, beating yourself up about your purchases can also affect your relationship with money.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the end, success with money is about being consistent, which doesn\u2019t have to mean being perfect. Allowing yourself some freedom for treats is what will actually ensure you are more likely to succeed.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAussies tend to focus only on what they feel is \u2018bad\u2019 spending, like takeaway or coffee, but ignore what they could have saved through everyday habits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing attracted to discounts without looking at other ways or a better deal is common.
