The officer killed during a shootout<\/a> in Montreal\u2019s C\u00f4te-des-Neiges neighbourhood on Monday has been identified as Const. Mohamed Lamine Benredouane.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is with profound sadness that we confirm the tragic death of Const. Mohamed Lamine Benredouane while on duty protecting the public,\u201d reads a statement from Montreal police issued Monday evening.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Benredouane,\u00a034, was killed shortly after police responded to a report of a gunman near the intersection of Trans Island and de Courtrai Aves.<\/p>\n

Benredouane went to school in the neighbourhood and was well-known by many, C\u00f4te-des-Neiges\u2014Notre-Dame-de-Gr\u00e2ce borough mayor\u00a0St\u00e9phanie Valenzuela told reporters on Tuesday<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have someone that grew up in the neighbourhood and decided to serve his community in the way that he did, by ultimately losing his life,\u201d Valenzuela said. \u201cIt was an act of heroism that I can\u2019t highlight further.\u201d<\/p>\n

A bystander,\u00a0Micheel Moshe Mizrahi<\/a>, 68, was also killed during the shootout between police and an armed man, who police say was also killed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The suspect was identified Tuesday by the coroner\u2019s office as\u00a0Seth Hatfield, 25, of Lethbridge, Alta.<\/a><\/p>\n

A second officer was injured in the altercation. She is in stable condition.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a press conference Monday afternoon, SPVM Chief Fady Dagher, who had yet to formally identify Benredouane, described him as a dedicated officer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI spoke with his brother. It\u2019s difficult, it\u2019s extremely difficult,\u201d Dagher said, noting he had spoken with Benredouane on two occasions a few years back.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can tell you he was excellent \u2014 he was an excellent police officer,\u201d he added. \u201cWhen you become a police officer, you know the risks. But you never expect something like this to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Benredouane was not scheduled to work Monday, a police source told The Gazette. He had taken an overtime shift to earn extra money.<\/p>\n

The city\u2019s police brotherhood called the event \u201cdeeply sad.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur colleague gave his life to protect the citizens of Montreal, loyal to the end of the oath of office he took,\u201d Yves Francoeur, the president of the Fraternit\u00e9 des policiers et polici\u00e8res de Montr\u00e9al, wrote in a statement. \u201cConstable Mohamed Lamine Benredouane leaves behind his loved ones, his colleagues and a whole community that will unite together (in sadness). We salute his courage and sense of duty, and he will never be forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n

The brotherhood also offered its condolences to the family and loved ones of Mizrahi, the bystander who was shot in the fracas.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe brotherhood underlines the courage of the brave police officer who was seriously injured during the operation, and salutes her resilience, wishing her a prompt recovery,\u201d the statement reads. \u201cThis terrible event reminds us that every day, police officers don the uniform to serve the greater good, which includes protecting society from its most violent elements.\u201d<\/p>\n

A GoFundMe campaign<\/a> has been launched to provide financial assistance to Benredouane\u2019s family. The campaign attracted widespread support, raising almost $240,000 by Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is with immense sadness and heavy hearts that we are launching this fundraiser to support the family of our friend, colleague, and brother-in-arms, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty,\u201d organizers wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cRest in peace, my brother. You served with honour until your final breath. Your memory will live on forever in our hearts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Benredouane is the first Montreal police officer to die in the line of duty since 2002<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Beno\u00eet L\u2019\u00c9cuyer, a 29-year-old officer, was fatally shot on Feb. 28, 2002 after chasing a car that failed to stop.<\/p>\n
