{"id":50997,"date":"2025-10-02T10:10:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T10:10:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/50997\/"},"modified":"2025-10-02T10:10:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T10:10:16","slug":"groceries-and-gas-are-top-purchase-pain-points-td-bank-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/50997\/","title":{"rendered":"Groceries and gas are top purchase pain points, TD Bank finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/108206081-17592685691759268566-41891279111-1080pnbcnews.jpg\" alt=\"'Fast Money' traders talk market impacts of cracks in the consumer\"\/><\/p>\n<p>For years, consumers have tried to keep up with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/10000793\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rising cost of living<\/a>, but some may be reaching their limit.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bea.gov\/news\/2025\/personal-income-and-outlays-august-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">personal consumption expenditures price index<\/a>\u00a0showed that consumer spending stayed strong even as inflation remains stubbornly elevated and the cost of food and other goods continues to rise.<\/p>\n<p>However, Americans are now increasingly leaning on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/credit-cards\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">credit cards<\/a> to buy essentials like gas and groceries, according to TD Bank, which provided CNBC with an exclusive early look at its new credit card pulse check survey.<\/p>\n<p>More from Personal Finance:<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/30\/government-shutdown-congress-what-it-means-your-money.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How a government shutdown may affect your money<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/29\/government-shutdown-financial-prep-for-federal-workers.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How workers can prepare financially for a government shutdown<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/25\/education-department-opens-fafsa-ahead-of-schedule.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Education Department opens FAFSA ahead of schedule<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Grocery prices rose by 2.7% in August from a year earlier, the fastest annual pace since August 2023, according to the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/cpi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">consumer price index<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, groceries make up the bulk of credit card purchases for many Americans, with 46% citing it as their top spending category in a typical month, the TD Bank survey found.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it&#8217;s a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/02\/10\/wholesale-egg-prices-have-blown-way-past-prior-record.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dozen eggs<\/a>\u00a0or a pound of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/04\/why-coffee-prices-are-so-high-and-where-theyre-headed-next.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coffee<\/a>, Americans are having a hard time adjusting to current prices, other <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.wf.com\/wfmoneystudy-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">research<\/a> also shows. In a recent report by Wells Fargo, about 90% of consumers said they experienced some form of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/02\/28\/americans-are-suffering-from-sticker-shock-heres-how-to-adjust.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sticker shock<\/a>,&#8221; particularly when it comes to buying food or a tank of gas.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The things that people tend to notice more frequently become more prominent in people&#8217;s minds,&#8221; said Chris Fred, head of credit cards and unsecured lending at TD Bank.<\/p>\n<p>Although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/oil-gas\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gas prices<\/a> are down year over year, 13% of the more than 1,000 adults polled by TD Bank said that gasoline was their top credit-card spending category.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is a common misperception of credit card spending as frivolous, but that just isn&#8217;t the reality for most Americans,&#8221; Fred said.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, such non-discretionary spending caused the most strain on household budgets, TD Bank also found: Nearly half, or 49%, of consumers said their spending on groceries increased the most over the last year, while 10% cited gasoline.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Credit card balances near an all-time high<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/credit-cards\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">credit card<\/a>\u00a0balances have continued to rise, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkfed.org\/microeconomics\/hhdc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">research on household debt<\/a>\u00a0by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.<\/p>\n<p>Balances reached a collective $1.21 trillion in the second quarter \u2014 up 2.3% from the previous quarter and in line with last year&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/02\/13\/credit-card-debt-hits-record-1point21-trillion-new-york-fed-report-finds.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">all-time high<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Data from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/investor.equifax.com\/news-events\/press-releases\/detail\/1364\/equifax-national-market-pulse-data-shows-u-s-consumers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Equifax<\/a>\u00a0also found that many consumers continue to spend, despite elevated prices and high borrowing costs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The presumption is, don&#8217;t borrow,&#8221; said Sheila Bair, former chair of the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. &#8220;The exception is a credit card that you pay off at the end of every month.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bair is also a member of CNBC&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/global-financial-wellness-advisory-board\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Global Financial Wellness Advisory Board<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/c\/CNBC?sub_confirmation=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Subscribe to CNBC on YouTube.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"For years, consumers have tried to keep up with the rising cost of living, but some may be&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":50998,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[11],"tags":[9184,114,357,184,85,932,942,46,266,23353],"class_list":{"0":"post-50997","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-economy","8":"tag-breaking-news-investing","9":"tag-business","10":"tag-business-news","11":"tag-economy","12":"tag-il","13":"tag-inflation","14":"tag-investment-strategy","15":"tag-israel","16":"tag-personal-finance","17":"tag-personal-loans"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/50997","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=50997"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/50997\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/50998"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=50997"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=50997"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=50997"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
