Another\u00a0new Rolling Stones album?\u00a0Only\u00a0three years since the last<\/a>? And again with the Andrew Watt production? If you\u2019ve grown comfortable with the band\u2019s lengthy between-album hiatuses, or sceptical of the benefits that Watt brings to his charges \u2013 Paul McCartney<\/a>, Elton John<\/a>, Pearl Jam<\/a>, all of them (you\u2019d think) quite capable of producing themselves \u2013 your red flags will be fluttering.<\/p>\n If so, then rest easy \u2013 or mostly.\u00a0Foreign Tongues\u00a0turns out to be a rousing and varied experience with plenty of trademark Stones action and only a handful of caveats. Dig the inimitable duelling guitar gnarl of the visceral Rough And Twisted, Keith Richards mixed here on the left and Ronnie Wood over there on the right like a 2026 version of the Keith\/Little Mick separation on\u00a0Let It Bleed<\/a>\u2019s Live With Me<\/a>. Or the echoes of Soul Survivor<\/a> in Richards\u2019 repeated riff to In The Stars, a phantom of Gimme Shelter<\/a>\u2019s apocalyptic vision, with Jagger noting \u201ca sickness in the land\u201d but concluding with an exhortatory \u201cDo you wanna dance till the roof falls in?\u201d \u2013 repentance be damned. Better still is Ringing Hollow: a post-Gram Parsons<\/a> country swinger, on the edge between relaxed and reflective, Jagger road-tripping across the American landscape, with flashing images that weigh a lifetime in thrall to its culture. \u201cThe dreamers get the dream they want,\u201d he concludes, almost wisely, as, nearly buried, Keith\u2019s backing vocals growl and wheeze.<\/p>\n It\u2019s the Stones doing Stones things \u2013 surely all we need. But apparently not, as\u00a0Foreign\u00a0Tongues\u00a0piles on the guest appearances like cocaine on a 1972 rider. Steve Winwood \u2013 tantalisingly advertised on organ and piano \u2013 is everywhere but (kind of) nowhere. There\u2019s a vague swirliness to one of the guitar tracks on Divine Intervention that may denote the presence of The Cure<\/a>\u2019s Robert Smith. But the conclusion that these names are here for a PR story rather than their distinctive musicality is inescapable. Bruno Mars is good on cowbell tonight, innee? Who can tell? Maybe in tribute to Brian Jones<\/a>\u2019s famous intention to \u201cplay the things you can\u2019t hear\u201d, he\u2019s inaudible.<\/p>\n Granted, there\u2019s a little too much loud and busy \u2013 Mr Charm and Hit Me In The Head (with an archived Charlie Watts<\/a> drum track) barrel along, aggressively in your face \u2013 plus some unnecessary reaching for a modern airplay hit, the most palatable option being Never Wanna Lose You\u2019s catchy crypto-disco, with Jagger barking and snarling in a weirdly fun way. Yet also key moments when the Stones\u2019 soul shines through. Reliably, Keith\u2019s lead vocal on Some Of Us adds empathy, more poignant still now it\u2019s so clearly an effort, while the Heartbreakers\u2019 Benmont Tench on organ \u2013 either given or taking more bandwidth than Winwood \u2013 weaves a spell. It\u2019s one of those rather-too-rare moments where an instrumental part has room to breathe, as it does on the rueful Back In Your Life, with Ronnie Wood exquisite throughout, and incandescent on his epic closing solo (\u201cCome on Ronnie!\u201d cheerleads Jagger).
