WASHINGTON \u2014 Iran is\u00a0reportedly eyeing a scheme to make $40 billion\u00a0a year off\u00a0the Strait of Hormuz as\u00a0Secretary of State Marco Rubio<\/a>\u00a0has called on the Islamic Republic to \u201cabandon the fantasy\u201d of imposing fees of any kind on ships passing through the\u00a0critical oil chokepoint.<\/p>\n

Rubio warned that\u00a0such actions would imperil any peace deal between Washington and Tehran, as key officials in the regime have mused about\u00a0mandatory insurance<\/a>\u00a0requirements and other methods of extracting payments from ships.<\/p>\n

\u201cFees and tolls are the same thing to me. If you\u2019re paying someone to go there, I don\u2019t care if you call it a fee or a toll or a donation; it\u2019s a toll. That\u2019s how we\u2019re going to define it,\u201d Rubio told reporters in Bahrain. \u201cIt\u2019s not even workable.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s say a ship says, \u2018I\u2019m not going to pay the fee.\u2019 It\u2019s not like a toll on the road. You don\u2019t get a ticket in the mail. You get shot at. You sink one ship, not one other ship is going to move,\u201d he added. \u201cSo you might as well abandon the fantasy now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iran has estimated that charging for\u00a0security and environmental-related services related to passage through the Strait of Hormuz could net Tehran $40 billion annually, the\u00a0Wall Street Journal reported<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Iran is reportedly researching other models for different waterways across the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Under the memorandum of understanding signed by President Trump last week, the Islamic Republic agreed to allow safe passage through the straits without charge for 60 days.<\/p>\n

But there have been questions about what comes after that period, which has been set aside for negotiations of a final agreement between the US and Iran.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we\u2019ve been clear. You can call it a fee. You can call it a toll, call it whatever you want,\u201d Rubio said. \u201cIf you are charging money to use the straits, we won\u2019t support it. We won\u2019t. We won\u2019t tolerate it. We won\u2019t allow it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rubio also stressed, \u201cWe want a deal but not at any price. We will not accept a situation where the Strait of Hormuz belongs to any country \u2026 [but] we\u2019re going to give diplomacy every chance to work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Trump scored a critical reversal from the Senate, which had voted Tuesday<\/a> to rein in his ability to attack Iran under the War Powers Act, something that enraged him.<\/p>\n

Wednesday\u2019s reversal was a symbolic move to ease tensions with Trump and technically doesn\u2019t impact the prior war powers resolution the Senate greenlit.<\/p>\n

Trump huddled with Senate Republicans during their lunch on Wednesday and was \u201cmad as a murder hornet\u201d over the war powers vote, peeved that it could weaken his hand at the negotiating table with Tehran, according to Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.)<\/p>\n

The president and Senate GOP aired out some of their grievances, though Trump did most of the talking and took very few questions from senators, sources told The Post. <\/p>\n

At one point, Trump got into a shouting match with Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) and lashed out at Sen. Dave McCormick (R-Pa.), who missed the vote because he was with the president at an event in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n

The White House later invited Cassidy<\/a> to the Situation Room for a briefing on the current Iran outlook, with the Louisianan and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) reversing their earlier votes on the war powers resolution.<\/p>\n
