Here\u2019s why"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqtyayo5000x28p1crvre6hu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/25\/climate\/europe-heat-france-uk-records\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">record-shattering June heat<\/a> that\u2019s baked Europe this week would have been \u201cvirtually impossible\u201d just a few decades ago, according to a new analysis, which says the human-driven climate crisis is \u201cunequivocally to blame.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqtyvajr00093b6ryazp6kxa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The ongoing heat wave is the region\u2019s \u201cmost severe ever recorded,\u201d according to the study published Friday by World Weather Attribution, a scientific network which analyzes the role of climate change in driving extreme weather events.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqtyvajr000a3b6rvkxdai67@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Huge parts Europe have been suffocating under a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/24\/weather\/video\/what-is-heat-dome-cli-hrzn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stubborn heat dome<\/a> parked over the continent, trapping hot air and leading to extreme and dangerous heat and humidity. Heat domes are not unusual, but the temperatures in this one have been.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqtyvajr000b3b6r4byxvqrf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Records have fallen like dominoes: France experienced its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/25\/climate\/europe-heat-france-uk-records\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hottest day on record Wednesday<\/a>, beating a record set only the day before. The UK posted its highest June temperature ever recorded Wednesday, then <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/metoffice\/status\/2070192676872327263\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">smashed it again Thursday<\/a>. Spain endured its <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AEMET_Esp\/status\/2070047022070087841\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">two hottest June days<\/a> on record Monday and Tuesday. Switzerland posted its <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/meteosuisse\/status\/2070157252120478067\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">hottest recorded June temperature<\/a> on Thursday. Provisional data from Germany shows that country reached <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/dwdderwetterdienst.bsky.social\/post\/3mp7dqqczsk2i\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a never-before-seen high temperature<\/a> on Friday. The list goes on.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/gettyimages-2283150486.jpg\" alt=\"Commuters wait on a Paris Metro platform during hot weather on June 24, 2026 in Paris, France.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1334\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqtyvajr000c3b6rv3naldgp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To calculate the role climate change played in these extremes, WWA scientists used real-world and forecast data to analyze the three hottest days and nights of this heat wave across a huge section of Europe, comparing the likelihood of similar extremes during past major heat wave years of 1976 and 2003, when the Earth was cooler.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqtyvajr000d3b6r85aub4ma@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They found both the daytime highs and nighttime temperatures during this period would have been \u201cvirtually impossible\u201d 50 years ago, in 1976, when some of the previous European heat records were set.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqtyvajr000e3b6ruh5xmaqp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The world has warmed by nearly 2 degrees Fahrenheit (1.1 degrees Celsius) over the past 50 years, which has increased the chances of extreme heat immensely, the scientists said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqtyvajr000f3b6rulc8bug9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A similar heat wave occurring in June 1976 would have been a startling 6.3 degrees Fahrenheit cooler (3.5 degrees Celsius), according to the study, which has not been peer-reviewed but used peer-reviewed methods.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqtyvajr000g3b6rh5bhstlt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The scientists looked at nighttime temperatures, too, which have also been record-breaking: France endured its hottest night ever recorded Wednesday into Thursday. Heat at night is particularly dangerous because it allows the body no time to recover.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqtyvajr000h3b6r1i78vx8p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Europe\u2019s sweltering nighttime heat is about 100 times more likely today than it was in 2003, the year of a major European heat wave that killed more than 70,000 people, the report found.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqtyvajr000i3b6rgja7kje2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The WWA scientists also analyzed the impacts of the heat wave\u2019s high humidity. They looked at 854 cities across 30 heat-affected European countries and found 45% of them have broken or are about to break their all-time records for wet bulb globe temperature.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqtyvajr000j3b6rjsjnhtlx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wet bulb globe temperature accounts for the combined impacts of temperature, humidity, sun and wind, and is a measure of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/29\/climate\/heat-survivability-health-death-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heat stress and the body\u2019s ability to cool itself.<\/a> The higher it gets, the harder it is for the body to rely on its cooling mechanisms, especially sweating, increasing the chances of heat exhaustion or even heat stroke, which can be fatal.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/wwa-image-heat.png\" alt=\"WWA image heat.png\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"6042\" width=\"5381\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqtyvajr000k3b6r4scuxno5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis summer shows that at 1.4 degrees Celsius of global warming, extreme heat is already reaching the limits of our societies\u2019 ability to cope,\u201d the scientists wrote.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqtyvajr000l3b6r0pm2cq2y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Europe\u2019s heat has quickly turned deadly. Although the true extent of deaths won\u2019t be known for some time, countries have already reported hundreds of heat-related fatalities.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqtyvajr000m3b6rtjovvmfh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In Spain, more than 200 people have died due to the heat wave over just four days, according to data estimates from the country\u2019s mortality monitoring system, reported Thursday.
