Zohran Mamdani<\/a>, the New York City<\/a> mayor, said on Sunday that he and a slew of democratic socialist<\/a> allies who prevailed in recent primary elections are carrying a \u201cnational message\u201d to struggling working Americans hungry for a new kind of politics \u201ccoast to coast\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mamdani<\/a> made that triumphant clarion call on ABC News\u2019s This Week just five days after he had seen his endorsed candidates win<\/a> Democratic nominations in three races for New York congressional seats, as well as for five state legislature positions in Albany. He made no effort to disguise his delight that his clean sweep marks a dramatic shift<\/a> in Democratic politics \u2013 not just in New York City, which he has led since January, but also across the US.<\/p>\n

He said that collectively they were carrying a \u201cNew Deal understanding\u201d of Democratic politics to Congress and on to the \u201cnational stage\u201d. It spoke, he said, to Americans feeling exhaustion at struggling to make ends meet \u201cevery single day\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t have to nationalize that message,\u201d Mamdani remarked. \u201cThat is a national message \u2013 it\u2019s a national crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamdani\u2019s clear framing of last Tuesday\u2019s victories as a political jolt of nationwide significance poses a challenge to the established leadership of the Democratic party of the sort that they fear most. It is one thing for the mayor of New York<\/a> to confine his brand of democratic socialism to America\u2019s largest and wealthiest city.<\/p>\n

It is quite another when he injects it into Washington.<\/p>\n

Established Democrats<\/a>, branding themselves as \u201cmoderates\u201d and Mamdani as \u201cextremist\u201d, have not held back from attacking his burgeoning political movement. Richard Blumenthal, a Democratic senator from Connecticut, predicted: \u201cThe effort to nationalize New York is going to fail. What\u2019s happening in New York will be really irrelevant by the time of the [midterm] elections in November.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fifteen self-labelled \u201cmoderate\u201d Democrats in the US House signed an open letter<\/a> that, though it did not mention Mamdani or his endorsed allies, was clearly targeted at them. \u201cWe are capitalist, not socialist,\u201d they said. \u201cWe are mainstream, not extreme. We are proud, not ashamed, of America.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked by This Week what he thought of his critics putting out a manifesto against him, Mamdani joked: \u201cSounds pretty socialist to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI\u2019m not interested in writing a manifesto, or frankly, in reading one. I\u2019m interested in delivering.\u201d<\/p>\n

Part of the danger that Mamdani represents to establishment Democrats is that he can now substantiate his argument that the party must deliver more to working Americans by pointing to his own concrete achievements. On Thursday, New York\u2019s rent guidelines board voted to freeze rents<\/a> for about 1m apartments.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve delivered free childcare for two-year-olds for the first time in New York history,\u201d Mamdani told ABC News, adding for good measure that they had also repaired 165,000 potholes.<\/p>\n

He said that such a record showed that democratic socialism was at heart pragmatic \u2013 \u201cbecause if we cannot deliver for working people, then what is it for\u201d?<\/p>\n

Mamdani also unleashed piercing criticism of the established leadership of his party. \u201cWhat we\u2019ve seen over many years is a willingness to not only explain away the status quo, but frankly, even to look to benefit from the status quo,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s not what working people are looking for from our party.\u201d<\/p>\n

He charged the party hierarchy of failing to present a positive vision, and for thinking that merely attacking Donald Trump<\/a> was enough. \u201cYou have got to have something you are not just willing to stand up for \u2013 but that you\u2019re also willing to explain how this is relevant to working people,\u201d Mamdani said when asked if one \u201ccan\u2019t just be anti-[the president]\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m leading the wealthiest city in the wealthiest country in the history of the world,\u201d Mamdani said. \u201cBut it\u2019s also a city where one in four are living in poverty, and for far too many Americans, those contradictions have become their day-to-day life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tuesday\u2019s primary results in New York were especially poignant because Mamdani\u2019s allies ousted two incumbent Democratic representatives. Brad Lander<\/a> defeated Dan Goldman, and Darializa Avila Chevalier<\/a> beat Adriano Espaillat.<\/p>\n

Claire Valdez also took the party\u2019s nomination over Antonio Reynoso, the established choice.<\/p>\n

Chevalier has attracted particular attention over her political views, which include describing herself as a \u201cprison abolitionist<\/a>\u201d. In his ABC News interview, Mamdani refused to be drawn into that framing.<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cThere are prisons. And what we\u2019re also showing in this city is that safety is not something that\u2019s up for debate \u2013 it\u2019s something that we\u2019re actually delivering on. And I\u2019m proud to be the mayor of a city that currently has the lowest recorded number of murders and shootings in recorded history in New York City.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though several current Democratic politicians are openly spooked by Mamdani\u2019s rapidly growing influence within the party, others are keeping the door open to dialogue. Chris Murphy, another Democratic senator for Connecticut, told NBC\u2019s Meet the Press that the party was a big tent.<\/p>\n

He said he did not want to see Democrats embrace socialism. \u201cBut we have to understand that people do not believe that this version of capitalism has worked,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cAnd frankly, it hasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Raphael Warnock, the US senator whose fellow Georgia Democrat Jon Ossoff is up for Senate re-election in November, told CNN\u2019s State of the Union: \u201cI don\u2019t believe in abolishing the police. You don\u2019t have a country without borders.\u201d<\/p>\n

But he added: \u201cI\u2019m worried about what\u2019s going to happen to ordinary people, who can\u2019t afford their lives right now.
