It\u2019s hard to know, coming into every year, which movies will perform well and what will fall short of expectations, and by the time December comes around, there are always a few surprise hits and shocking bombs. Looking back at 2025, one of the most unexpected success stories of the year, both at the box office and the Oscars, was Sinners<\/a>, the vampire horror film directed by Ryan Coogler<\/a> and starring Michael B. Jordan<\/a>. Coogler is widely hailed as one of the best working directors in Hollywood right now, but a $90 million budget for an original vampire movie in an era where movie fans are reluctant to show up to theaters was certainly a gamble, no matter how you slice it. The film proved to be more than worth the investment, though, grossing $370 million at the global box office and even winning four Oscars<\/a> at the 2026 Academy Awards.<\/p>\n

The most shocking horror hit in 2026 so far has been Obsession<\/a>, which hails from up-and-coming star director Curry Barker. The film was produced on a shoestring budget estimated to be around $750,000, and it\u2019s now one of the greatest investments of all time for Focus Features<\/a>. The film has grossed over $370 million at the global box office, and as it continues to add more to its total, it is set to pass Sinners early this week to become the highest-grossing original film of the 2020s. When Sinners broke this record last year, most fans felt that it would hold the title for years to come, but it was impossible to see the biggest sleeper hit of 2026 in Obsession coming.<\/p>\n
