These are needed for electric vehicles, wind turbines and solar panels. Sub-Saharan Africa hosts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/news\/articles\/2024\/04\/29\/cf-harnessing-sub-saharan-africas-critical-mineral-wealth#:%7E:text=With%20sub%2DSaharan%20Africa%20estimated%20to%20hold%20about%2030%20percent%20of%20the%20volume%20of%20proven%20critical%20mineral%20reserves\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">about 30%<\/a> of the world\u2019s mineral reserves, including <a href=\"https:\/\/zerocarbon-analytics.org\/policy\/developing-africas-mineral-resources-what-needs-to-happen\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">huge quantities<\/a> of critical minerals: 92% of all platinum, 36% of all chromium, 54% of all manganese and 56% of all cobalt. <\/p>\n<p>Many critical minerals are concentrated beneath the continent\u2019s biodiverse forests.<\/p>\n<p>      Read more:<br \/>\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/sacred-forests-in-west-africa-capture-carbon-and-keep-soil-healthy-158325\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Sacred forests\u2019 in West Africa capture carbon and keep soil healthy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We are conservation scientists researching the impacts on the environment when resources such as timber, minerals or animal species are extracted and used by people. We have spent years tracking how resource demand can reshape fragile ecosystems. <\/p>\n<p>In our most recent study we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-026-10551-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">set out to<\/a> track exactly how much forest had been lost because of mining across sub-Saharan Africa over 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>We used satellite data to identify 16,627 mining areas in the region. We tracked what happened to the land surrounding the mines between 2001 and 2020. We then compared places where mining was already taking place with similar areas that had not yet been mined but would be in the future. This allowed us to estimate how much deforestation was caused purely by a new mine setting up, rather than by other factors, such as the expansion of farms.<\/p>\n<p>      Read more:<br \/>\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/angolas-peatlands-trap-carbon-and-clean-the-regions-water-how-we-mapped-this-newly-found-landscape-195825\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Angola\u2019s peatlands trap carbon and clean the region\u2019s water \u2013 how we mapped this newly found landscape<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-026-10551-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revealed<\/a> that between 2001 and 2020, 187,000 hectares of forests were converted to mines in Africa. This is 0.03% of Africa\u2019s forests but is still a massive area \u2013 roughly  the size of Mauritius.<\/p>\n<p>            <a href=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/742389\/original\/file-20260617-83-1e1v1k.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.1.0&amp;rect=42%2C0%2C684%2C384&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1000&amp;fit=clip\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An aerial photo showing a very brown river and a large patch of green forest eaten away by a mine\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/file-20260617-83-1e1v1k.jpg\" class=\"native-lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>              Mining along the Ituri River, in the Okapi Wildlife Reserve, DRC.<br \/>\n              WCS\/ICCN<\/p>\n<p>This number only represents the deforestation by the mine footprint itself (the mine, its pits and tailing ponds where mine waste sludge is stored). <\/p>\n<p>But mines cause far wider damage to the environment.  We found that every hectare deforested within a mine\u2019s immediate footprint triggered an additional 34 hectares of forest to be lost from the surrounding region. <\/p>\n<p>      Read more:<br \/>\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/africa-has-the-highest-rate-of-forest-loss-in-the-world-what-the-g20-can-do-about-it-257023\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Africa has the highest rate of forest loss in the world \u2013 what the G20 can do about it<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is because of other activities directly triggered by the establishment of a mine, like road building, new urban settlements and agricultural expansion specifically to accommodate the mine. <\/p>\n<p>Demand for green energy transition minerals like copper and cobalt is expected to grow 40-fold <a href=\"https:\/\/iea.blob.core.windows.net\/assets\/ffd2a83b-8c30-4e9d-980a-52b6d9a86fdc\/TheRoleofCriticalMineralsinCleanEnergyTransitions.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">by 2040<\/a>. What must be done to protect them<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wri.org\/insights\/forest-carbon-sink-shrinking-fires-deforestation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Healthy forests<\/a> are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clientearth.org\/latest\/news\/what-is-a-carbon-sink\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">carbon sinks<\/a>; they absorb  more carbon from the atmosphere than they emit. Destroying them means faster global warming and biodiversity loss that can take many decades to recover. The minerals needed for the technologies meant to save the planet from climate change (solar power and electric vehicle batteries) could speed up ecological collapse in biodiversity hotspots.<\/p>\n<p>To prevent this, developers and governments must immediately integrate these large, offsite environmental impacts into regulatory processes and environmental impact assessments.<\/p>\n<p>Mining\u2019s impact on wider landscapes<\/p>\n<p>            <a href=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/742387\/original\/file-20260617-57-xduirx.png?ixlib=rb-4.1.0&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1000&amp;fit=clip\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A satellite image showing a dense green area with a few minor roads\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/file-20260617-57-xduirx.png\" class=\"native-lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>              A 2014 satellite image of a forest in Lualaba province, DRC. Within one kilometre of a new mine, the local deforestation rate surges by an additional eight percentage points on average compared to unmined landscapes.<\/p>\n<p>            <a href=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/742388\/original\/file-20260617-57-g3w2rl.png?ixlib=rb-4.1.0&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1000&amp;fit=clip\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A satellite image showing large areas where forest has been destroyed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/file-20260617-57-g3w2rl.png\" class=\"native-lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>              The same forest pictured in 2025 after mining started.<br \/>\n              Courtesy ESRI Wayback.<\/p>\n<p>More alarming is the distance this damage travels. Elevated forest loss persists up to 20km away from the mining epicentre, and this impact continues for more than a decade after operations begin. Our research found that this development triggers a wave of deforestation that is on average 34 times bigger than the mine itself. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, where half the world\u2019s cobalt is found, this multiplier rises as high as 58. <\/p>\n<p>Some mines are more destructive than others. For example, we found that mines extracting cobalt and copper, key to the green energy transition, triggered the highest rates of additional deforestation. Iron ore operations showed the largest geographic reach, triggering forest loss up to 20km away.<\/p>\n<p>What needs to happen next<\/p>\n<p>First, countries need to adopt a consistent minimum standard for environmental impact assessments before mines are set up (to estimate the damage they\u2019ll cause and find ways to reduce it). Currently, not all of these assessments are equally rigorous. <\/p>\n<p>In some countries, the assessment only extends one kilometre beyond the proposed mine (or a few hundred metres, as in C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire). International buyers, technology manufacturing giants and automotive companies must verify and audit the environmental impact of suppliers (the mines). This is similar to the zero-deforestation supply chains that have been introduced for global agricultural and meat sectors. These bypass environmental and safety regulations entirely, creating greater risk for both ecosystems and workers. International mineral supply chains cannot continue to ignore this.<\/p>\n<p>Wealthy nations driving the mineral demand must provide financial and technical assistance to producing nations to uphold environmental law.
