New York\u00a0\u2014\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n SpaceX was expected to be one of the hottest stocks on Wall Street this year \u2013 and it has quickly delivered on that promise, shattering trading volume records while companies race to launch new products tied to the stock.\n <\/p>\n

\n Both the size of the IPO<\/a> and the hype around it \u2013 and CEO Elon Musk \u2013 have ignited outsized interest from investors.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI don\u2019t recall seeing one stock dominate our customers\u2019 activity in this manner,\u201d Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, said in a note.\n <\/p>\n

\n SpaceX stock by the numbers:\n <\/p>\n

IPO: Priced at $135 a share<\/p>\n

June 12: Stock debuts at $150 \u2013 and closes at roughly $161<\/p>\n

June 16: Stock surges to an intraday high of almost $226 before closing at $202<\/p>\n

June 23: Stocks drops to an intraday low of $147 before closing at $156<\/p>\n

June 26: Stock ends the week at $153, down 17% on the week<\/p>\n

June 29: Stocks closes at $164, up 7.15% on the day<\/p>\n

\n Charles Schwab, which has been offering trading services for more than 50 years, told CNN that SpaceX\u2019s IPO day was in the top five most active trading days in Schwab\u2019s history.\n <\/p>\n

\n At Citadel Securities, a market maker, SpaceX\u2019s IPO day was the largest single day of net buying from retail investors on record, outpacing the previous record by 50%, according to Scott Rubner, the company\u2019s head of equity and equity derivatives strategy.\n <\/p>\n

\n The stock\u2019s initial post-IPO surge briefly lifted SpaceX\u2019s market value above Amazon and Microsoft. At $150 a share \u2013 its debut price \u2013 SpaceX still has a larger market value than either Meta or Tesla.\n <\/p>\n

\n Investors who bought and held are experiencing volatility, which is normal in post-IPO trading. SpaceX shares soared 15% in their first week of trading before falling 17% in their second week. But it hasn\u2019t dissuaded people from getting involved.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cInvestors who chased the first-week rally got hurt,\u201d Luke Lango, technology analyst and publisher of Innovation Investor, said in an email. \u201cThat\u2019s the oldest IPO story in the book.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cBut the underlying business \u2014 dominant launch monopoly, profitable Starlink, xAI embedded at the core \u2014 is a decade-long story, not a two-week story,\u201d he added.\n <\/p>\n

\"SpaceX<\/p>\n

\n On trading platform Interactive Brokers, SpaceX has consistently been in the top two most traded stocks every day since its IPO. One stock that has overtaken SpaceX on Interactive Brokers: Micron Technology (MU<\/a>). Micron has soared as part of the chipmaker boom<\/a>.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cSpaceX has captured the imagination of a lot of traders who are normally very active in Tesla, and they\u2019ve moved their focus toward SpaceX,\u201d Sosnick at Interactive Brokers told CNN in a phone interview.\n <\/p>\n

\n Jay Ritter, professor emeritus at the University of Florida, told CNN that IPOs with the most volatility tend to be highly valued growth companies.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThese companies are almost always growing rapidly, but with a lot of uncertainty about how big and how profitable they will become,\u201d Ritter said. \u201cSpaceX certainly fits into this category.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n SpaceX has enormous business ambitions, including data centers in space <\/a>and perfecting its rocket launch capabilities. But SpaceX is burning cash on its AI businesses, and investors are making a bet that the company will be able to reach profitability in the future.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI expect that the stock will continue to be volatile for many years,\u201d Ritter said.\n <\/p>\n

Wall Street and ETFs<\/p>\n

\n SpaceX won\u2019t be a part of the S&P 500 for at least a year, but it\u2019s set to become a part of other popular indexes. SpaceX has officially joined the Russell 1000 and will join the Nasdaq 100 in July.\n <\/p>\n

\n That means millions of Americans might own the stock indirectly through index funds in personal portfoilos or their retirement accounts.\n <\/p>\n

\n And it\u2019s not just indexes: Wall Street is building an entire ecosystem around the stock. Investment firms are launching new exchange-traded funds at a breakneck pace in order to give investors yet more ways to interact with the stock.\n <\/p>\n

\n Leveraged ETFs that aim to amplify SpaceX\u2019s performance by providing double the returns (or losses) are already hitting the market.\n <\/p>\n

\n Options trading for SpaceX started last week, allowing investors to place more sophisticated bets on where the stock is headed next. Options quickly saw a surge in interest.\n <\/p>\n

\n SpaceX\u2019s business model includes rockets, internet service and AI.<\/a> But many investors are also buying something else: Elon Musk.\n <\/p>\n

\n The entrepreneur has one of the most devoted followings in corporate America, with investors willing to pay more because they believe in the person running the company as much \u2013 or more \u2013 than the business itself.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cIn terms of capturing the public imagination \u2026 it\u2019s impossible to look at SpaceX or Tesla without adding in the Elon Musk factor, and that\u2019s really hard to quantify,\u201d Sosnick said.\n <\/p>\n

\n Musk is the richest man in the world \u2013 with his net worth eclipsing $1 trillion after the SpaceX IPO \u2013 and people want a piece of that track record of success.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cMost of the companies Elon runs are really not particularly valued on fundamentals, but rather on sentiment,\u201d Howard Chan, founder and CEO at Kurv Investment Management, told CNN in a phone interview. \u201cPeople expect good things from the growth that Elon can potentially bring.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
