{"id":520135,"date":"2026-07-01T15:39:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-01T15:39:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/520135\/"},"modified":"2026-07-01T15:39:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T15:39:09","slug":"canadian-boy-11-died-from-rabies-after-waking-up-with-bat-on-his-mouth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/520135\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian boy, 11, died from rabies after waking up with bat on his mouth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1y6jmq004t28p28sno0qb0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An 11-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/17\/world\/canadian-passenger-hantavirus-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian<\/a> boy has died from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/18\/health\/rabies-animal-vaccine-disease-health-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rabies<\/a> after waking up with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/02\/25\/health\/newly-named-coronavirus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bat<\/a> on his nose and mouth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1yq6rh0006356r0xddhd8x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The episode occurred during a visit to a cottage in northern Ontario in 2024, according to a report published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmaj.ca\/content\/198\/25\/E969\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Canadian Medical Association Journal<\/a> on Monday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1yq6rh0007356r3zgaogxx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Woken by the shock, the boy, who wasn\u2019t named in the report, smacked the bat off his face. His father then caught it in a cooking pot and released it outside, doctors from the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health at the University of Manitoba, Canada said in the report.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1yq6ri0008356r71vcmwrg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Since the child had no visible bite marks and the bat\u2019s behavior did not seem erratic, the boy\u2019s parents did not seek medical attention.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1yq6ri0009356r53ru2u7g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, 19 days later, the boy began to experience a progressive tingling sensation and numbness on the right side of his face, followed by facial swelling and a loss of appetite.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1yq6ri000a356rkqbi3a2a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Four days after the symptoms began, a local urgent care clinic prescribed him medication used to treat herpes, as it was presumed he had symptoms of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/09\/13\/health\/bells-palsy-essay-irpt\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bell\u2019s palsy<\/a> caused by the herpes virus.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1yq6ri000c356rc2j8mvxm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Three days later, he was brought to a city hospital emergency department in Ontario with painful swallowing and vomiting.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1zurkz0035356rhqtwxd8t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A physical exam found ulcers in his gums and a mild impairment in a nerve on the right side of the face that provides sensation and controls chewing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1yq6ri000g356r5xbpid75@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The boy\u2019s family told the doctors about the incident with the bat and, the next day, the emergency doctor notified the local public health authority.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1yq6rj000h356rjlxop2z4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, the hospital discharged the child on a presumed diagnosis of herpes gingivostomatitis, which is sores in the lips or mouth caused by herpes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1yq6rj000i356ro1rp3okb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            By the next morning, the boy had returned to hospital with weakness on the right side of his face, reduced sensation and slurred speech.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1yq6rj000j356rxx5r1w9u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While waiting to be admitted, he developed a fever, difficulty swallowing, confusion and visual hallucinations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1yq6rj000k356rr5f0su5d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            By the evening, the boy\u2019s condition had rapidly deteriorated. He was placed on a ventilator and admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1yq6rj000m356r5m50etwu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen we saw the patient in the PICU, we strongly suspected rabies,\u201d the doctors said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1yq6rj000o356r4isnm6k0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A PCR test confirmed a rabies diagnosis on the fourth day of the boy\u2019s admission. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency then also identified a bat rabies virus variant.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1yq6rj000r356rofya4lkf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The child died on his 17th day in hospital.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1yq6rj000s356rwo4dj2l3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Rabies is a virus that attacks the central nervous system of humans and other mammals, and it is almost always fatal once symptoms appear.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1yq6rj000t356rm5ofdosy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It is contracted through an infected animal\u2019s bite or scratch, or if the animal\u2019s bodily fluids enter the eyes, nose, mouth or an open wound, according to the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadianveterinarians.net\/about-cvma\/latest-news\/rabies-in-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">website<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1yq6rk000v356rrt0oufb0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While there are several thousand cases of rabies confirmed in animals in Canada each year, according to the CVMA, rabies is very rare in humans in Canada, with just 28 human cases reported in the country since 1924.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1yq6rk000x356rcmamwedx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This patient was the first reported case of locally acquired rabies in Ontario since 1967, the doctors said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr23irny003i356r4zw0ce2f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the United States, fewer than 10 people die of rabies every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rabies\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">website<\/a>. However, the CDC says rabies \u201cposes a serious public health threat\u201d because it is found in wildlife throughout the country, except for Hawaii.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr23ossm003k356r5774jzcl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Globally, rabies poses a serious health risk in more than 150 countries, largely in Africa and Asia, causing tens of thousands of deaths each year, with children under 15 making up 40% of the victims, the World Health Organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/rabies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reported<\/a> in 2024.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1yq6rk000y356r8yzthse6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dogs cause 99% of rabies cases in humans, according to WHO, but in the Americas, where this is controlled, bats are the main source.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr20rhcc003a356rdp8srw9p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In Canada, skunks and foxes are also frequent transmitters of the disease, according to the CVMA.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1yq6rk000z356rg6sxbqb0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Symptoms in humans tend to occur 20 to 60 days after exposure, but can begin much sooner or later, the CVMA said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr1yq6rk0010356rhgegzxef@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They include initial flu-like symptoms, such as a fever, headache or weakness, or pain or discomfort by the bite site.
