Australia\u2019s creative and media leaders have called on the Albanese Government to hold firm on its existing copyright framework.<\/p>\n

Australian artists, authors, and creators gathered at Parliament House yesterday (July 1st) to call on the government to use its full weight to bring AI<\/a> companies to the table for licensing agreements with Aussie creators.<\/p>\n

Those gathered at Parliament House\u00a0included\u00a0William Barton,\u00a0Paul Dempsey,\u00a0Warren H. Williams,\u00a0Anna Funder, Mahalia Barnes,\u00a0John Collins,\u00a0Andy Griffiths,\u00a0KLP,\u00a0Francois Tetaz,\u00a0Mark Seymour\u00a0and\u00a0Holly Rankin (Jack River)\u00a0plus industry representatives from the\u00a0Australian Recording Industry Association,\u00a0Australasian Performing Right Association Ltd\u00a0and\u00a0Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society,\u00a0Australian Society of Authors,\u00a0Australian Writers\u2019 Guild,\u00a0Australian Publishers Association,\u00a0Mushroom Group,\u00a0Australian Music Publishers Association Ltd,\u00a0Gyro,\u00a0Association of Artist Managers,\u00a0Copyright Agency\u00a0and\u00a0Free TV Australia.<\/p>\n

Lucy Hayward, Australian Society of Authors, said, \u201cDespite what tech might tell you, copyright is simple. If you want to use someone\u2019s work, you need to ask permission. And copyright is also how authors earn a living.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead of coming to creators and rights holders to do deals, big tech is throwing money at lobbying in Canberra for solutions that would enable them to use creators\u2019 work in exchange for chump change. For all intents and purposes that\u2019s wage theft for the creative industries.\u201d<\/p>\n

Annabelle Herd, ARIA, said, \u201cWe are standing at Parliament House today, united across the creative and media industries, to ask the Government to hold the line it drew in October and let the licensing market function as it should.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBehind the written music that you hear online, whether you\u2019re in Australia or anywhere else, there is a very sophisticated, very official licensing system that ensures that the creator of that work and the rightsholder gets paid\u2026 We are here to do deals with AI companies \u2014 many deals are happening globally and those deals will continue to be announced, and that is the mechanism by which Australian creators and writers and authors and others will get paid.\u201d<\/p>\n
