The mom, based in Alberta, Canada, was out on a stroll with her dog when she came across a young grizzly bear in her path.

Trying her best to yell and distract the bear, this dog mom’s anxiety was more than obvious, especially as the bear continued to walk around her pup. While the story ends with no injuries or harm, there’s no doubt the situation left this dog mom shaken.

🐶SIGN UP to get “pawsitivity” delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾🐾

“Bravest Person, She Did Not Panic!”

While hiking on a trail with her dog, this pet parent faced the nightmare of encountering a grizzly bear in her path. The young bear, obviously curious about the strangers, would repeatedly approach the pair and, at times, circle them to get closer to the dog.

In her attempt to get the bear to stay away, the dog mom would constantly yell at the bear in a deep voice, hoping to scare it off. Despite her attempts, the grizzly continued to get close, even picking up speed at one point.

With her coffee mug in hand, the dog mom threw the mug in the opposite direction. Naturally, the grizzly bear went off to investigate the mug, giving the dog mom and her furbaby the perfect chance to run away and create distance.

Related: A Cougar Was Attacking This Goat, and Their Human’s Actions Are Beyond Heroic

While the entire situation was frightening, it fortunately ended without anyone or any furbaby injured. In the comments, viewers were left shocked and offered advice for anyone else who may find themselves in the same situation.

“Bravest person, she did not panic!” one person added.

Another viewer exclaimed, “This lady mom’d herself out of a bear attack. She needs to be interviewed.”

“Hats off to the dog too for not being reactive,” one user pointed out.

If you ever cross paths with a bear on a walk, resist the urge to run — instead, back away slowly while keeping your dog leashed and close by your side. Speak in a firm, calm voice and make yourself look big. Avoid direct eye contact, and never get between a bear and her cubs. A little bear spray in your pocket doesn’t hurt either. While easier said than done in the moment, these small steps can help keep you and your furry friends safe.

Related: Mama Bear Has One Cub Stuck on the Other Side of a Wall, and She’s Not Leaving Without Her

This story was originally published by PawNation on Jul 2, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
