Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar accused his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, of incitement to genocide on Thursday after Fidan called Israel a \u201cburden that humanity can no longer bear\u201d and said it was a \u201cproblem\u201d for the world.<\/p>\n

Fidan made the comments in a TV interview, in which he called for global sanctions on Israel. His comments followed Israel\u2019s recognition this week of the 1915 Armenian genocide, which Ankara denies.<\/p>\n

\u201cIsrael is not just Turkey\u2019s problem, nor is it just the issue of our president,\u201d Fidan said in the interview, according to subtitles posted by Sa\u2019ar. \u201cBut everyone knows it, feels it, whispers it in hidden corners, and occasionally speaks openly. These are humanity\u2019s common problems. This is what we must call it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cThese people have become a burden that humanity can no longer bear, with their policies and their mindset. Humanity cannot bear this\u2026 I may be the only country raising my voice, but this is a problem for all of you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sa\u2019ar shot back on X, writing that Fidan\u2019s \u201csickening words are textbook incitement to genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n

The foreign minister added, \u201cDehumanizing the Jewish people as an \u2018unbearable burden\u2019 is the classic, horrific language of history\u2019s worst eliminationist regimes. The civilized world and Turkey\u2019s NATO allies must unequivocally condemn this explicit call for the erasure of Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n

Relations between Israel and Turkey collapsed following the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack and the subsequent war in Gaza. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is a leading critic of Israel, has repeatedly accused it of genocide and has praised Hamas.\n<\/p>\n

Fidan has slammed Israel previously, and said in April<\/a> that security concerns were \u201cbeing used by the [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu government as an excuse to occupy more land.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a fundamentalist government,\u201d he added at the time. \u201cThey are a problem for the whole world. This is not just a problem for Turkey.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, Israel formally recognized the 1915 Armenian genocide<\/a> for the first time, a move that antagonized Turkey, which denies that the Ottoman Empire committed a genocide against Armenians.<\/p>\n

Erdogan said in response that Israel was\u00a0using the issue to deflect attention from the war with Hamas in Gaza.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe pay no heed to the slanders directed at our country by the murder network that has the blood of 75,000 innocent people in Gaza, mostly children and women, on its hands,\u201d Erdogan said in remarks to the media following a cabinet meeting in Ankara, according to the state\u2011run Anadolu news agency.<\/p>\n

Some Israeli officials have warned that Turkey, formerly an ally, is increasingly becoming a regional adversary of Israel. Turkey will host a NATO summit of the alliance next week.<\/p>\n
