Patrick Beach Couldn\u2019t do much about Egypt\u2019s first goal, but made an incredible save in stoppage time to prevent a second and force the game into extra time. 7<\/p>\n

Alessandro Circati Rarely put a foot wrong but spent most of his time marshalling Omar Marmoush so wasn\u2019t able to contribute much to Australia\u2019s buildup. 6 <\/p>\n

Harry Souttar Made some crucial blocks to keep Australia in the game, especially in extra time. Needed to use his towering frame far better at set pieces. Skied his penalty in the shootout. 6<\/p>\n

Lucas Herrington Defended Mohamed Salah with maturity and composure. Presented zero attacking threat from set pieces despite his height, and sent his penalty off the crossbar. 6<\/p>\n

Jordan Bos Offered the biggest threat getting in behind Egypt\u2019s defence from right-back, but was badly tackled just before half-time and limped off. Substituted. 6<\/p>\n

Aziz Behich Stayed disciplined at left-back in the first half and sprung forward more in the second, but needed more precise crosses. 6<\/p>\n

Aiden O\u2019Neill Marshalled Egypt\u2019s midfield well and delivered the free kick that was turned in to bring Australia level. Grew into the second half with better set pieces before being substituted at the end of regulation time. 7<\/p>\n

Jackson Irvine Gave away the free kick that saw Egypt score the opener. Kept Australia structured through midfield, but wasn\u2019t as effective at progressing the ball as against Paraguay. Nailed his penalty. 6<\/p>\n

Connor Metcalfe Invisible in the first half, seemed to run out of legs in the second. 5<\/p>\n

Cristian Volpato Australia\u2019s most dangerous attacker in the first half, but didn\u2019t get on the ball enough to drive at Egypt\u2019s defence. Should have delivered better corners. 7<\/p>\n

Nestory Irankunda Let Emam Ashour drift away from him to score the opener. Led Australia\u2019s press and counterattacks, but was taken out multiple times before he could get going. 6<\/p>\n

Substitutes: Kai Trewin (Bos 45) Aside from an early scare, kept Marmoush quiet in the second half. Didn\u2019t offer many attacking overlaps like Bos did, so narrowed Australia\u2019s attack. 6; Ajdin Hrustic (Volpato 74) Tried to add some creativity and through-balls but was regularly smothered. 6; Mohamed Toure (Irankunda 74) Offered more physicality up front than Irankunda but was largely isolated and looked rusty on the ball. 6; Paul Okon-Engstler (O\u2019Neill, 90) Added sharpness to a slowing midfield and helped carry Australia forward. 6; Awer Mabil (Metcalfe 90) Used his experience to hold Australia\u2019s defensive shape, with the compromise being not getting forward as much as Volpato. Clanged a dangerous free kick into the wall at the end of extra time, but easily scored his penalty. 6; Mat Ryan (Beach 119) Came on minutes before the penalty shootout and conceded every one he faced. 5<\/p>\n

Egypt (4-2-3-1)<\/p>\n

Mostafa Shobeir Handled all his saves and distributions cleanly, but was rarely threatened. 6<\/p>\n

Karim Hafez Went tit-for-tat with Bos and was lucky to escape a yellow card for the tackle that took the Australia wingback off the field. Assisted the opening goal. 6<\/p>\n

Yasser Ibrahim Struggled to contain Irankunda in the first half, but improved physically in the second. Earned a yellow card for a poor tackle late in extra time. 6<\/p>\n

Ramy Rabia Egypt\u2019s best defender, composed in his decisions, aerial challenges and clearances. Neatly slotted home his penalty. 6<\/p>\n

Mohamed Hany Barely tested in the first half, appeared to get knocked unconscious early in the second half but played on. Scored the own goal that pulled Australia level. 5<\/p>\n

Hamdy Fathy Worked well alongside Marwan Attia to cancel out Australia\u2019s midfield, but offered little going forward. 6<\/p>\n

Marwan Attia Mostly invisible in midfield trying to wrangle Irvine and O\u2019Neill, but popped up a bit more in extra time. 6<\/p>\n

Mostafa Ziko Was largely ineffective on the left, substituted just after the hour. 6<\/p>\n

Mohamed Salah Kept quiet by Herrington and Souttar. Chased shadows for the most part and snatched the few shots he had. Scored his penalty right down the middle. 6<\/p>\n

Omar Marmoush Marshalled well by Bos and Circati in the first half, struggled to make an impact in the second against Trewin\u2019s fresh legs. 6<\/p>\n

Substitutes: Hossam Abdelmaguid (Fathy 66) Shored up Egypt\u2019s defence in the second half, made a few key blocks. Scored the winning penalty. 6; Haissem Hassan (Ziko 66) Offered more life and energy down the right and delivered some dangerous crosses into the box.
