Michael Mann\u2019s been developing\u00a0Heat 2\u00a0for years at this point<\/a>, including publishing the thing as a full-fledged novel in 2022, making it clear that the project would serve, at least partially, as a prequel to his 1995 original. That has, as a matter of course, kicked off a certain amount of speculation about casting, since any prequel version of Heat\u00a0was inevitably going to get wrapped around the axle on questions about how to handle the first movie\u2019s ridiculously well-stocked cast.<\/p>\n

Now, we\u2019re starting to get a clearer picture on how this is all going to shake out\u2014including reports from\u00a0<\/a>The Wrap<\/a>\u00a0stating that stars Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio, who\u2019ve been circling the film for the last several months, have either signed, or are very close to signing, on for two specific roles. In Bale\u2019s case, that would be the part of detective Vincent Hanna, and in DiCaprio\u2019s, thief Chris Shiherlis\u2014meaning the two Oscar winners are about to set themselves on a direct collision course with the legacies of Al Pacino and Val Kilmer, respectively.<\/p>\n

Those are some pretty heady comparisons, although Bale and DiCaprio\u2014who\u2019ve shared a lot of directors and accolades with Pacino and the late Kilmer over the years\u2014are obviously heavyweights in their own rights at this point. Meanwhile, Heat 2 still has one big question mark hanging over it, in the form of professional robber Neil McCauley, played by Robert De Niro in the original film;\u00a0The Wrap\u00a0suggests\u00a0Adolescence\u2018s Stephen Graham is in talks for the part, which feels like a wider departure than either Bale-as-Pacino or DiCaprio-as-Kilmer. Meanwhile, Adam Driver is reportedly in talks for the film\u2019s villain, the leader of a violent gang of home invaders who haunts Hanna through each of the novel\u2019s multiple eras.<\/p>\n
