Ian Somerhalder<\/a> is getting torched after a July 1 Instagram Story made his supplement hustle look a little too close to cancer-cure territory. <\/p>\n

The Vampire Diaries<\/a> star posted screenshots of customer messages claiming tumors were shrinking, then added a link to his supplement line with the words, \u201cget what your body needs here.\u201d <\/p>\n

One message claimed, \u201cMy husband has 80-100 tumor masses that are all over his body,\u201d before adding that \u201cfor the first time in 15 years not only have new ones stopped coming in, but the existing ones are shrinking.\u201d Another message suggested berberine \u201cmight be what is shrinking his tumors,\u201d and thanked the company because \u201cthese supplements are helping my husband, best friend and soulmate come back to life.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Somerhalder did not directly claim that berberine pills from The Absorption Company \u2014 which he co-owns with his wife, Nikki Reed<\/a> \u2014 cure cancer, he deleted the posts shortly after they went live.<\/p>\n

The backlash hit fast. One Reddit user,<\/a> whose mother is battling cancer, wrote that they support \u201cnatural remedies to ease their ailments,\u201d but slammed posts claiming supplements \u201cshrinks cancer cells\u201d or \u201celiminates them completely\u201d with \u201cno studies to back up their claims.\u201d The user warned that those messages can give patients \u201ca false sense of hope,\u201d especially when chemo or radiation may be doing the actual work.<\/p>\n

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center<\/a> lists berberine as a supplement with potential drug-interaction risks, including possible effects on bosutinib, an oral chemotherapy, and increased blood levels of tacrolimus and cyclosporine. Clinical research has also explored berberine for colorectal adenoma recurrence, meaning precancerous polyps, not as a treatment for active cancer. <\/p>\n

The controversy lands in the middle of Somerhalder and Reed\u2019s very polished post-Hollywood rebrand. Reed recently appeared solo on Dr. Will Cole\u2019s The Art of Being Well<\/a> to discuss her postpartum health crisis and the couple\u2019s supplement company. <\/p>\n
