Data from the Copernicus Marine Service, implemented by the non-profit Mercator Ocean International, found sea temperatures hit 69.38 Fahrenheit (21 Celsius) on June 21, beating the previous record last set in 2024 by 0.18 degrees Fahrenheit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0t7qy500033b6ryq236c3e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The abnormal heat has been driven by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/11\/weather\/super-el-nino-declared-global-impacts-climate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">onset of El Ni\u00f1o,<\/a> a natural climate pattern characterized by unusually warm waters along the equatorial tropical Pacific Ocean. El Ni\u00f1o has only just started but it may intensify into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/07\/weather\/super-el-nino-extreme-weather-climate-disaster\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one of the strongest in decades<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0tarc3000c3b6rhbe32vgs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Layered underneath that is the human-driven climate crisis, which is also driving up temperatures. For decades, oceans have acted as the planet\u2019s main heat sink, absorbing 90% of the excess heat produced by humans burning fossil fuels.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr11ywf600003b6sz8n5hkqe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u2600\ufe0f <a href=\"https:\/\/cnnweather.onelink.me\/KSXA\/sforlc5x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Get your forecast in the CNN Weather app<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0ty7jl000l3b6rua6eeqv9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cRising sea surface temperatures are therefore not unexpected,\u201d said Michael Meredith, an ocean scientist at the British Antarctic Survey. \u201cBut the pace of warming we are now seeing is alarming.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0t7qy500063b6ra273vej0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s not yet clear whether this unprecedented June heat is temporary or a sign of things to come, but experts are expressing concern.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0t7qy500073b6rb91g1gre@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cCurrent conditions could indicate the beginning of a new phase, leading, once more, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/03\/18\/climate\/ocean-heat-record-year-climate-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">uncharted territory<\/a>,\u201d said Carlo Buontempo, director of Copernicus Climate Change Service.\ufeff \u201cWith ocean temperatures at these levels and El Ni\u00f1o on the horizon, we are likely to see more temperature records fall in the coming months.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0t7qy500083b6r1b24pr96@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What happens in the oceans has huge implications for global weather patterns.
