But what about changing how they see?<\/p>\n How to make the invisible visible: As simple as it gets<\/p>\n The answer was surprisingly low-tech.<\/p>\n In 2013, researchers at the Sm\u00f8la wind farm tried a simple visual tactic. Just one of the three turbine blades was painted black.<\/p>\n The goal was to override the motion smear.<\/p>\n With just one blade changed<\/a>, the rotating structure no longer looked like a transparent blur.<\/p>\n It created a stark, pulsing pattern instead. This warned the birds that a solid object was in their path.<\/p>\n Scientists spent years monitoring the site. They used trained dogs to search the ground for carcasses. The data from the May et al. (2020) study revealed a clear victory.<\/p>\n An average 71.9% drop in bird fatalities each year<\/p>\n Neighboring white turbines saw no change, but the painted ones became drastically safer, according to the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory<\/a>.<\/p>\n For white-tailed eagles, the results were even better.
