NME\u2019s latest stars of The Cover<\/a>, Haute & Freddy<\/a>, have created an exclusive playlist to accompany the story\u2019s launch \u2013 check it out below.<\/p>\n

The rising pop<\/a> duo are on this week\u2019s (July 6) edition of The Cover, a manifestation of NME\u2019s commitment to supporting emerging talent across the globe on a weekly basis. Every week, a rising artist will feature on The Cover \u2013 you can read Haute & Freddy\u2019s profile here<\/a>, written by Nick Levine and featuring photography by Kristen Jan Wong.<\/p>\n

Alongside their The Cover story, Haute & Freddy have curated an exclusive playlist, titled \u2018Juggling Practice\u2019. The selection includes three of their own songs, \u2018Dance The Pain Away\u2019, \u2018Freaks\u2019 and \u2018Shy Girl\u2019, alongside songs from \u201980s icons Kate Bush<\/a> and Depeche Mode<\/a>, as well as tracks by drag queens Devine and Violet Chachki. As jobbing songwriters in a highly competitive scene, Haute & Freddy had been orbiting each other for years \u2013 they even hung out at the same clubs. But it wasn\u2019t until the pandemic, when every creative in the city was making a pivot, that vocalist Michelle \u201cHaute\u201d Buzz and drummer-percussionist Lance \u201cFreddy\u201d Shipp revealed their true hand: the songs they wrote in private, away from high-pressure sessions for other artists. \u201cIt was like, \u2018Wait a minute, we literally gravitate towards the same things!\u2019\u201d Shipp recalls.<\/p>\n

Finding a like-minded partner-in-crime proved invigorating for the duo. \u201cWe were just so tired of having to be in a box when we were writing songs,\u201d Shipp says. \u201cSo we basically said: \u2018Let\u2019s make music without really having a goal. Let\u2019s just play.\u2019 And that gave us the freedom to make whatever we wanted.\u201d As they let their musical imaginations run wild, they also invented the characters of Haute & Freddy and concocted an outlandish backstory. The seed was an old-timey font they were drawn to \u2013 \u201cit was very circus flier,\u201d Buzz says \u2013 but the idea grew roots when they dropped their debut single, \u2018Scantily Clad\u2019, at the end of 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith that song, the music kind of led us to the circus lore,\u201d Buzz recalls. \u201cThe lyrics gave us this whole narrative of us upsetting the queen and the nobles. So then it was like, \u2018Who are we exactly, and why are we upsetting her?\u2019 And then we started talking in the comments [section] with fans, and they really picked up on all the court language we were using.\u201d As Haute & Freddy, they\u2019ve committed to the bit ever since.<\/p>\n
