{"id":528608,"date":"2026-07-06T23:01:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-06T23:01:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/528608\/"},"modified":"2026-07-06T23:01:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-06T23:01:08","slug":"williamson-health-board-unanimously-approves-hospital-sale-to-ascension-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/528608\/","title":{"rendered":"Williamson Health Board Unanimously Approves Hospital Sale to Ascension | News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Williamson Health will no longer operate as an independent, community-owned hospital following a vote by the hospital system\u2019s board on Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Williamson Health Board of Trustees said there wasn&#8217;t\u00a0\u201ca clear path to remain independent.\u201d\u00a0County Mayor Rogers Anderson\u00a0motioned to sell to Ascension Healthcare, which is based in St. Louis. The board voted unanimously to do so.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Williamson County Commission will have to vote on the sale of the hospital at a future date. The cost to sell the hospital is $700 million, with additional capital commitments to round it out at around $900 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Ascension has agreed to keep Williamson Health employees for one year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">One year ago, Williamson Health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.williamsonscene.com\/news\/williamson-health-eyes-sale\/article_f4b44657-2454-5b41-bb23-afbd47ce1d82.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> during a Williamson County Commission meeting that it was considering a sale, citing staffing shortages, an increase in operating costs and inadequate reimbursements from insurance companies, including Medicare and Medicaid, among other concerns.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Nashville Business Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/nashville\/news\/2026\/07\/03\/williamson-health-financial-projection-sale.html?utm_source=st&amp;utm_medium=en&amp;utm_campaign=me&amp;utm_content=NA&amp;ana=e_NA_me&amp;j=46450266&amp;senddate=2026-07-06&amp;utm_term=ep1&amp;empos=p1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported via a five-year financial projection document<\/a> dated May 2025 that Williamson Health is predicting impact from the HCA Healthcare <a href=\"https:\/\/www.williamsonscene.com\/business\/tristar-to-build-spring-hill-hospital-following-pushback\/article_48df4502-449b-5ca5-9d19-bf60166471ad.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">acute care hospital slated for Spring Hill<\/a>, as well as Vanderbilt Health\u2019s plans to add additional outpatient facilities in the area. With these changes, Williamson Health stands to lose $31.2 million in 2029.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">NBJ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/nashville\/news\/2026\/07\/03\/williamson-health-financial-projection-sale.html?utm_source=st&amp;utm_medium=en&amp;utm_campaign=me&amp;utm_content=NA&amp;ana=e_NA_me&amp;j=46450266&amp;senddate=2026-07-06&amp;utm_term=ep1&amp;empos=p1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">also reported<\/a> that an attorney with the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press raised concerns that documents related to the Williamson County Commission special-called meeting Monday were not released to the public at least seven days before the vote, violating public records laws.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">During the state legislative session earlier this year, two Franklin Republicans Sen. Jack Johnson (R-Franklin) and Rep. Jake McCalmon (R-Franklin)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.williamsonscene.com\/news\/williamson-weekly-williamson-health-exemption-bill-to-become-law\/article_183f9dd6-65e4-4a39-9642-c95357f8b414.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">passed legislation<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.williamsonscene.com\/news\/state-set-to-loosen-restrictions-in-potential-williamson-health-sale\/article_0072eb5e-4f43-491c-832f-332a0e3c32dc.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">allows for an exemption<\/a> for hospitals worth more than $500 million to put some of their profits from a sale toward non-health-related initiatives. Under current state law, the proceeds from the sale of a government-owned public benefit hospital are required to go in a trust where the funds are earmarked for public health initiatives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Williamson Health, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.williamsonscene.com\/business\/williamson-medical-center-announces-williamson-health-parent-brand\/article_074da01a-96d4-11ed-b019-2f337f849858.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">formerly known as Williamson Medical Center<\/a>, is a rare independently operated health system. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.williamsonscene.com\/news\/williamson-health-claims-financial-stability\/article_32f38409-4c4b-4eed-91a0-add5f7183ed4.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In April<\/a>, it released <a href=\"https:\/\/williamsonhealth.org\/strategic-planning-process-williamson-health\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a lengthy press release<\/a> explaining various parts of its strategic planning process, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.williamsonscene.com\/news\/williamson-health-eyes-sale\/article_f4b44657-2454-5b41-bb23-afbd47ce1d82.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">began in July 2025<\/a>. Williamson Health confirmed that no decision on a sale had been made at that time, and that the hospital is financially stable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Local Leaders React<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">District 8 County Commissioner Drew Torres and District 5 Commissioner Mary Smith both told the Williamson Scene that they weren\u2019t surprised by the board\u2019s move to pursue the sale of the hospital.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cMy perspective is this is step one, in what&#8217;s going to be a very long process. Ultimately, the commission has the final say,\u201d Torres said. \u201cI&#8217;d like to dig into the details of the responses [from the potential healthcare partners]. I know what we saw and heard today. I think there&#8217;s some things that you know, financially, I think they&#8217;re both equal. I want to understand all the other aspects of the proposals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI think the county commission has a lot to ponder,\u201d Smith said. \u201cI&#8217;m thankful that they had this meeting today, but I&#8217;m looking forward to hearing back from members of the community with regards to what their thoughts are. This is a big decision.
