Recovery required only patience, a yearly hay cut, and letting nature do what it does.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/earthsnap.onelink.me\/3u5Q\/ags2loc4\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">&#13;<br \/>\n    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fit-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1766790432_598_earthsnap-banner-news.webp.webp\" alt=\"EarthSnap\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The find could reshape how governments approach one of conservation\u2019s biggest and most expensive challenges.<\/p>\n<p>The study was conducted by researchers at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">University College London<\/a> (UCL). <\/p>\n<p>The team tracked vegetation changes between 2011 and 2022 across a 2-hectare tract of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/feeding-the-world-without-harming-nature-the-complex-balance-of-farming\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">farmland<\/a> in Norfolk, abandoned in 2005 after years of growing crops. <\/p>\n<p>Since then, the only intervention has been an annual traditional hay cut, nothing else.<\/p>\n<p>Nature beats the seed packet<\/p>\n<p>The results run directly counter to how most government-funded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/effective-conservation-efforts-key-to-saving-biodiversity\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">conservation schemes<\/a> currently operate, where commercial seed stocks are the default tool for restoring farmland into wildlife habitat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This study suggests that approach might be unnecessary, at least in many cases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur study shows that resisting seeding and allowing nature to lead may be worth trying a lot more in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/wildflowers-evolved-fast-enough-to-survive-a-historic-drought\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wildflower<\/a> meadow restoration,\u201d said lead author Carl Sayer from UCL.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatural plant recovery better safeguards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/can-trees-protect-their-genetic-diversity-for-millions-of-years\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">genetic diversity<\/a> than seeding and ensures that local species thrive, making meadows less generic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs things stand, the UK needs nature recovery fast, at big scales. In the push to achieve this goal, our study poses the question: Should we be employing patience over seed packet more often?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The stakes are real. UK wildflower meadows support rare plants and provide essential habitat for pollinators and other wildlife, yet they\u2019ve declined by more than 90 percent since World War II.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Restoring them brings a wide range of benefits, from reducing pollution to supporting mammals and birds to building <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/why-cities-struggle-to-use-nature-for-climate-resilience\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">climate resilience<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tracking how well farmland recovers<\/p>\n<p>Wildflower meadow restoration usually comes with a hefty price tag and plenty of labor, often involving commercial seed mixes, topsoil removal, or deep plowing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, almost no UK research has tracked how well abandoned farmland can recover into species-rich grassland using nothing but simple hay cutting. <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s largely because it requires years of patient, careful monitoring that few studies are set up to provide.<\/p>\n<p>This study managed it thanks to an unusually convenient setup. <\/p>\n<p>Land with a detailed history<\/p>\n<p>The researchers focused on Sayer\u2019s Meadow in Bodham, North Norfolk, owned by the lead researcher\u2019s father and co-author, Derek Sayer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That family connection meant the annual hay cutting never lapsed over the years, and the team had access to a detailed history of exactly how the land had been used before.<\/p>\n<p>Every two to three years, Sayer and a friend, Pete Robinson, carried out detailed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/scientists-weighed-earths-total-vegetation-and-were-disturbed-by-the-results\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vegetation<\/a> surveys, walking the field systematically and logging every plant species they came across.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They paid particularly close attention to two dozen one-meter-square plots set along two transects.<\/p>\n<p>Watching diversity double over a decade<\/p>\n<p>The numbers tell a clear story. Between 2011 and 2022, the count of plant species in the meadow rose steadily year after year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After a decade, several locally rare species had shown up on their own, including the southern marsh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/a-beloved-winter-drink-is-quietly-pushing-wild-orchids-toward-a-breaking-point\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">orchid<\/a>, greater tussock-sedge, yellow rattle, and common centaury.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the average number of species found in a single survey plot roughly doubled, climbing from around 10 in 2011 to nearly 20 by 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The team paid special attention to orchids and yellow rattle, plants considered reliable early indicators of a meadow\u2019s recovery. <\/p>\n<p>They were recording the flowers\u2019 precise GPS locations survey after survey, until eventually there were simply too many to count individually.<\/p>\n<p>Exactly how some of the rarer species reached the field remains something of a mystery, especially given how far away the nearest known populations were. <\/p>\n<p>The researchers suspect deer may have carried <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/one-third-of-europes-plants-at-risk-due-to-decline-in-seed-dispersers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">seeds<\/a> in, though they can\u2019t be certain.<\/p>\n<p>From failed farmland to a village attraction<\/p>\n<p>For Sayer, the project carries a personal dimension that goes beyond the data.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe field belongs to my family, and after an oilseed rape crop in 2005, we stopped farming it as the land was difficult to drain,\u201d he explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really wanted a wildflower meadow and all the advice was to seed it, but I resisted the temptation, as I have always been interested in nature\u2019s ability to recover itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the first orchids started appearing in our surveys, we were thrilled, and now the meadow is unbelievably diverse, with thousands of orchids that delight locals in the village.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur study shows what can be achieved by a traditional hay-cutting approach combined with nature\u2019s brilliant spontaneity.
